Boa heating question

Hello,

My name is Ricky. I don't frequest this part of the forum..yet ;)

My Ball Python room doesn't use hot spots. The room is approx 86 degrees 24/7 with 50'ish% humidity. I'm thinking about getting a RT Boa, simply because they're so frigg'n awesome! Can I keep the boa in the same room, or do they need a hot spot??

I personally wouldn't have a boa in that room: they prefer cooler temps and I wouldn't have my ambient temps for them at 86. My boas seem the most "happy" (and comfortable) with ambient temps at the 79-80 mark (my Argentines and BCL like it a bit cooler even) but I do have a mild hot spot for them for digestion.

They can be in the same room but you gotta quarantine it for at least 90 days before it can. Just make sure your other snakes don't get sick.

As far as heating, boas tend to like it a little cooler than that. What I do is use flexwatt heating on all animals at about 88-90 and keep my room around 79-81!!

I'm more concerned about the heating. Sounds like the room's going to be too warm. That blows chunks! I was pretty excited :tears:

Is the higher temperature bad for them, or is it something they can/will get used to? I mean, If it isn't then obviously I can't keep a RTB in there. I'm not going to risk it's health.

I'm just asking because a lot of people told me I was nuts when I changed my BP's from an 80/90 temperature gradient to an 85ish with no hot spot...and now they are doing just fine. I just want to make sure because I really really want a RTB and if85ish is ok then that will make me a REALLY happy camper.

If not, then I'm going to need a moment to myself. :please:

They won't like ambient temps in the mid 80's. I set the t-stat for the house AC at 80*F earlier this summer when it was in the upper 90's outside, and they quit using their warm hides except for a day after eating, and all but one started soaking in their water bowls. Scared the bejeezus out of me thinking they had mites, nope, they were just cooling off. Now we let the house go to 79*F during the day and 76*F overnight and no more soaking boas.

Yea, as I already mentioned to you, boas do like cooler temps. All of mine spend most of their time on the cooler side of their enclosures (about 77-78) and move to the hotspot (88) to digest and occasionally warm up a little. But they do better when they aren't too warm. Some boas will even begin to display neurological issues if kept too warm too long.

Do you know if there are any other larger snakes that CAN thrive in my room? other than Boas of course.
