In-between prey sizes, feeding an extra pup
I'm currently defrosting this round of rats. Both of my girls are at a point where they're on weaned, but I think one is starting to get a bit big for that and I want to add an additional pinkie to her meal as a slight bonus.

I'm thawing all 3 of the rats (2 weaned 1 pinkie) together now. Should I feed the pinkie first and then the weaned? or the other way around? And should I just put them both in the tank and let her do her thing, or do I actually have to like, place the second rat all up in her mouth as she's eating the first so she sort of chain-swallows them?

Obviously I've never done this before, haha.

    Thanks!

    The Serpent Merchant
I would feed the weaned and then the pinkie. That way if your BP only eats the first rodent you offer it will be the larger rodent.

When I do this I dangle the first rodent, let the snake finish eating it, then dangle the second rodent. I've found this to work the best for me, but you can try whatever you think will work best.

As soon as the rat is all the way down but before the snake leaves feeding mode (ie starts to go back to its hide or readjusts its jaw) is when I offer a second prey item.

So I was in a little bit of a rush last night, and I didn't get to actually wait for her to down the first rat before putting in the pinkie/fuzzy/whateveritis. I let her strike and constrict on the first one, and then I just sort of tossed in the second in her line of sight as she was doing so.

Anyway, the good news is I came back from going out and both f/t rats were gone, so she apparently went in for a second course on her own.

    Huzzah!

Thanks, as always, for the advice! This site is invaluable.
