    Not just "over here".
    Everywhere.

If you read the article it is not a federal law which would apply to the whole country, or even a provincial law that would apply to the province in question but, a single city by-law.
Almost all towns have these in droves, to the point that your average citizen is a criminal whether they know it or not.
This is why if "more government" is the answer you must be asking the wrong questions.
I just found a stunned by-law that will require me to register (and pay for of course) a licence for each ball python I own in this city but not an Indigo snake that is two feet longer (because it doesn't have "python" in its' name). Of course there is no information on who to make it payable to, or where to pay it, or hours of operation. This despite many lengthy searches specifically for such laws to stay in the green with my hobby in this city, instead I found out about it completely by accident.
Ahhh, forget that I am hereby renaming my BP's "African Gartersnakes"

Can't have boids in Saskatchewan. No bps or boas.

I'm in Alberta. No live Norway rats or hognoses.

Does the western hognose range extend north into Alberta Bobbafett?
There is alot of cases where indigenous wildlife aren't allowed. Here in Ontario I can't have Smooth Green snakes(without a ton of paperwork and continual reporting) but, I can have Rough Greens.
Too bad Eastern Hoggies have such strange dietary requirements or you'd likely be able to keep those there. Not to mention the paintjob variation in wild populations just smokes the Westerns. Their husbandry requirements prevented a stellar hobbyist snake.

Every municipality makes their own exotics laws in Ontario.

There are no federal or provincial laws governing the keeping of exotic pets in Canada. The municipalities are responsible for creating laws and regulations for this kind of thing. It is not illegal in Canada to have Ball Pythons, nor is it illegal in Toronto where I am - However it is illegal to have anything over 10 feet. Seeing that the Ontario government feels the need to review their legislation on this topic, I hope they adopt what Toronto has in place. It will at least save us ball python, and boa keepers. Some cities in Ontario have banned any constrictor over 2 feet in length.. If they decide that's the way to go than a lot of people will have no choice but to euthanize their pets.. It's very unsettled up here right now.

Yep, same here. Western hognoses are located down south towards the border. :(
