Re: Axanthics browning out.
Hoping to buy some in shortly once all my clutches have hatched to start so double recessive projects and make some co dom hets.
Think you are right black axanthics will be the way forward but still a bit pricey at the moment unless i make them my only purchase rather than the various new additions.
Re: Axanthics browning out.
People generally say VPI is the best axanthic line. They sell for more money and have a higher demand in the ball python market. I chose to purchase only VPI axanthics a few years ago for this reason.
There are good examples of each line though, but VPI is my pick because the different lines have not proven to be compatible, and I wanted the best I could afford.
As for browning out... it's important what other morph goes INTO the Axanthic. Complimentary axanthic morphs like lesser, fire/sulfur, etc will be good because those morphs stay lighter into adulthood, rather than darkening up.
Re: Axanthics browning out.
I personally like the Black Axanthanics. I love the color and pattern and does not fade or brown out as they grow. Our two adults look as good now as the day we got them as hatchlings. Justin Kobylka has a great line of black axanthics that I hope he starts selling soon.

Black axanthics are awesome. I'd love to see a Black Axanthic Pied.

Well these are my Males, Pastel and Axanthic (VPI)
This pic is a few years old, but that really doesn't change anything. Just like pastels get "browner" and lighter color through their shed cycles, so do Axanthics.
This a good pic of them looking their "best"

I hope that helps ;)

And how is the compatibility with these new black axanthics?
Short answer: no, they are not compatible, you will get double hets.
Long answer: Many expierienced breeders (NERD, VPI/Barkers, TSK, etc) publicly state the three main lines (VPI, Joliff, and SK) are not compatible. I've heard of different pairings from a variety of breeders, and all results were the same: normal looking animals het for Axanthic. Other people with unique lines (such as Markus Jayne) have found definitively that these lines are not compatible from visual x visual pairings and getting all normal looking animals double het for two different lines of axanthic.
Here's the caveat: there are a handful of different "lines" floating around, some may be compatible, or some may be the same "line". But so far, the answer is NOT COMPATIBLE.
