    Rat bite
My BP got bit tonight in the neck by a rat while she was constricting it. There is swelling in the bite area and the area is also slightly pinkish. She still ate the rat. Is there anything I should do or should I not really worry about it too much?

I have treated a bite from a rat in the past with betadine, you can pick it up from a local pharmacy. I just used a drop or two and mixed it with a few teaspoons of water and applied with a q tip.

^^ this and keep the enclosure clean. They have evolved to live through rodent bites but just as an extra precaution. Hope she heals fast!

The main thing is to make sure your enclosure is clean and that the wound stays clean. Monitor it closely.

I've personally never had to treat a bite, but betadine diluted does not sound like a bad idea. Though I'd probably consult a vet to be on the safe side.

Just betadine is fine. The wound will disappear in a few sheds and you won't even notice there was even a bite. :)

Ok thanks for the advice. I just bought a bottle of betadine today and it unfortunately ran $21...oh well, as long as she is ok!:please:

Did you dry it off after you dabbed it on? I actually didn't. I wonder how much good it actually does to them anyway. The cuts are basically underneath the scales, so I don't know if any of the betadine actually even reaches the wound lol. However, better safe then sorry.

sounds like it wasn't too bad of a bite. next time when feeding live. if your snake gets another bad hold on a rat where there's a chance for a bite. stick something in the rats mouth until it stops moving. I use my long tongs. the rat will stop moving well before the snake will release it, giving you time to also let go and not stressing the snake more.
