Newspaper Article: Exotic Pet Amnesty Day

This is from last weekend's Tampa Bay Times. The day's already passed, I but wanted to let anyone in the area know that the program been's started for when the day rolls around next time.

I also wondered if the man the reporter spoke to who said he'd adopt any animals left over and spent $800/month on his electric bill was someone from the forum!

Edit: To clarify, I didn't think any of you would ever give up animals, but might want to adopt some of the ones turned in!

I seriously doubt that they would 'adopt out' any of the prohibited reptiles (ie: Burms) Most likely if anyone is turning those in they're being euthanized.

I'm glad to see this kind of event being held. Sadly AC in my area tends to immediately euth anything that isn't cute, fuzzy, or livestock as they're just not equipped to deal with anything else.

As for burms, not sure about FL but up here the ones I've seen advertised for sale have a fairly high price tag. Someone who needs to rehome one wouldn't just turn it in at an event like this one.

You mean like the San Antonio craigslist? People will try to sell normal ball pythons for the monetary equivalent of gold.

My understanding is (I am in FL) that they would adopt out restricted species to those that had the correct permits. There are still permits in FL, you just cannot get them for pet purposes. It has to be for educational, research, or commercial purposes (and I doubt you can get a commercial permit for burms anymore since they cannot be sold out of state).

We are certified "adopters" with the state of FL for the amnesty days. It was really easy to get the paperwork done. And let me tell you the big giants were the FIRST ones to get adopted at all the different events that we went to!! We haven't lived in the state for over 2 yrs and they still invited us to come adopt animals!! Really great program from what we saw and were part of!
