Measuring temps

For those of you that use probes under your tubs, how do you titrate it to be 90 in the tub?

I'm waiting on my IR temp gun to come, so that's not an option yet. I used to keep the probe on the inside bottom of tub to ensure its 90, but read a few horror stories about snakes getting tangled up.

Should I set the thermostat to 91-92 to compensate for the layer of plastic? Orrrrrr?

Do you have a probed thermometer?

Even if it isn't in the tub permanently you can use it to check the temperatures to set the thermostat. Then once you have your temp gun you can use that to check up on the cage temps.

all of my thermostat probes are connected to my UTH on the outside of the cage. I place a probed thermometer right where the snake is going to be inside the hide then adjust the thermostat up til it reaches the desired temp on the thermometer. So that will be your number! example 93 deg. on your thermostat really = 90 deg in the cage to compensate for cage material , substrate, etc. from there you can raise or lower accordingly. Your heat loss transfer rate should stay the same.

Place it between the tub and the heat tape. Use electrical tape to keep it stuck to the heat tape. You will have to bump it up to 92-96F depending on your room temperatures to achieve a 90F hot spot inside the tub.

I have heat mats, not heat tape under their tubs, so I placed the probe between the mat and the bottom of the tub. Un-taping it and just using the probe to check temps for everyone is a bit inefficient. I have them all running around 93 right now. Only thing between the snakes and their heat mats is the tub floor and 1 layer of paper towel.

I said thermometer not thermostat...

I have my probe on the flexwatt under a tub in my rack that has belly heat. I put spacers between my tubs and flexwatt so I don't have to worry about the tubs rubbing on the flexwatt and ruining it.

I had this same question lol. Thanks for asking it and thanks for everyone's advice!
