    Got Balls?
    Follicle development after laying
How long normally does it take females to start building follicles again after laying a clutch of eggs?

I don't know the answer, but I am curious about the same thing. Both my girls will be laying within the month and I want to know if I'll be expecting late clutches again next year or if I have a chance at an earlier clutch.

I've noticed it being about 4-5 months after laying when follicles start growing again. I have a girl who laid in September and by February, she had 10mm follicles. She was at 20mm last month and I'm hoping she will be much closer to 30 this week when I ultrasound again.

I also want to note that this probably depends on how well the female eats after laying. The girl I have has eaten really well since laying.

The girl that we bred this year and last, ovulated on May 17 of 2012 and then went May 4th of this year. She laid 6 egss in 2012 and 9 this year. I know that doesn't really address your question about follicles, but it does show she could go less than a full year apart. She is off duty next year for a much deserved rest.

That gives me some hope! Both my girls should be laying first part of August. I'd love to ideally get babies before October.....

    Food for the thought.

The time between eggs being laid and new follicle development to get all your animals on the "same schedule" should not be your priority.

The most important is should the female be bred again?

Females go when they are ready, trying to get them on the same "schedule" for YOUR convenience is one thing letting the female doing their thing and go when THEY are ready is another.

Some female will be like clockwork every year clutch laid around the same time, some not so much, some won't go several years in a row either.

Personally I am just happy when they go regardless of the time of the year if I get a first clutch in February and the last one in october it's fine by me. :gj:

I know its rare but could a female still feed while she is building pre/post ovy?
