Herpstat 1 vs. Herpstat 1 Basic
What's the real difference? I looked on Spyder Robotics' web page and the only real difference I could fine were the following.

    • Basic doesn't have a build in safety power relay
    • Basic doesn't work with the Humidity probe (which I don't use anyway)
    • And the way the Basic does night drops is a little different (which I don't use anyway)

So can someone translate the first point for me? It seems like that is the biggest difference between the two besides price. I'm getting a new rack and will need a new thermostat to go with it but I want to make sure that I'm getting the right one. I'm familiar with Herpstat products as I already have a Herpstat 2.

The safety relay is well worth the cost. What is does is physically cut power to the unit in the case of a failure. This is what prevents the thermostat from failing in the "on" position which will cook your snake(s).

(A relay is basically an electronically operated switch)

The way it handles low temperature alarms are very different as well. The basic it is just a squeeker it makes lots of noise so you know to go check it. Unless you are not there. The HS one can be set so that if the probe suddenly goes cold the unit can kill power and squeal.

A good friend of mine bought a one (on my recommendation) for Christmas last month his cat playing with the dangling probe cord pulled the probe off the heat source, He came home to a squeeking herpstat and cool snakes, the basic would have tried to heat the probe (the cat was playing with) by maxing out the heater potentially cooking the snakes. It is quite a big difference. With the relay you likely do not need a failsafe without one? I would say you do need a failsafe, IMO it is not optional.

Thank you both for your replies! I just wasn't familiar with the term relay. I would MUCH rather have that option and pay the additional cost. I honestly would rather my thermostats shut off then try and go full power and cook my snakes! I also always back up my thermostats with a second thermostat just in case for that added extra security.

To save 24$ it makes no sense to me not to buy the HS one!

I was already thinking about buying that one anyway, but I just wanted to understand the differences. I'm the kind of person who likes to ask "why" questions.
