Windirs thread
For the time being I decided to name my ball Windir (bonus points if you know!). I decided to give him his own thread so I don't have to post new ones all of the time. I fed him yesterday, it was his 3rd meal. He's been eating one live mouse every sunday. I'm getting ready to try and switch him to f/t. I am completely alright with it if he decides he only wants live. My reasoning for f/t is the convenience of buying in bulk, I have a very hard time finding live rat weanlings in my area. Live mice are easy to find, live rats are easy to find but hes not big enough for one of those.
I don't want to "starve" him or cause him more stress, he seems to be settled in. I was wondering what your opinions are if I were to skip a meal and then try f/t? He's young so I don't want to do anything harmful by not giving him the food he requires but at the same time, if hes hungry enough maybe he'll take it no problem. Thoughts??
He has FINALLY shed completely. It wasn't one nice pretty piece, it was a few big pieces. Everything is off and brand new! I'm hoping to get pictures up some time tomorrow. I want to let his belly settle a little more after his meal. Here are a couple pics from last week, he's still partially shedding.

You won't starve him by skipping a week. I would watch him on his normal feeding day and if he's looking hungry give f/t a shot. I wouldn't force the issue too much, just see if he'll take it. If not, wait a week and try again.

Like sho220 said, it won't starve him. Some people on here have had BP's go several weeks up to a few months without eating. Just try and if he doesn't take it then try again the next week.

I've had a yearling girl go on a 10 month fast - she wouldnt eat ANYTHING... now she eats like a pig. So a week off wont hurt :D

I tried a f/t weanling rat wednesday. I used tongs, wiggled it around, kinda drug it along the paper towelrs. He "bolted" towards it, strick it, coiled but then left it after a few minutes. Didn't attempt to eat it or anything. After that he spend a good hour or so looking for food.

If they strike and coil, leave them alone for a few hours. Chances are they will eat it when it's dark and quiet.

This, also I have a buddy that will grab the tail an tug on it a little like the rat is fighting. He says it makes them feel like the dead pray is fighting a bit so keeps their intrest.. I feed live so never tried it. Just thought I'd share what he does.

There's ONE time I got mine to eat prekilled (a super fiesty one) and I honestly don't think she would've eaten it if I hadn't been shaking iroind duringthe coil.. A second after the strike she got confusedand started loosening her grip.

Sounds like it may not have been warm enough. Mine will do that. They coil for so long the rat cools off and then they let it go and go hunting for food  Usually if I heat it up again they'll strike and coil and hopefully eat, but I have reheated and re-offered three times before they finally got it down, so.
