I know it's a Black Pastel, but I'm unsure of the quality of it as I'm not sure what to ideally look for in Black pastels, though I know spotting on the back is one thing. So what do you think of this?

Too dark for my personal liking. I know black pastels are a dark morph, but you want contrast between the blacks and markings. That contrast in turn translates into combos and other morph offspring. Mrl249s BP on the right is a fine example imo.

Eh, that's okay. I think Black Pastels should be really contrasty with rich colouration, practically black and orange as hatchlings. On a personal note, I also think they should be super busy patterned and very heavy handed on the graniting. My ideal Black Pastel is very dramatic in appearance.

Here are three I hatched out last year, two are very dark and rich colored and one much lighter, pairing was a black pastel to a dinker female

Ah okay, I'll just have to look around and find something I like and that really appeals to me then.

It's ok. My personal preference is lots of orange and a bit lighter:

This will give you an idea on color change in black pastels and what to expect from hatchling to adult (Gulf Coast Line Black Pastel)

    http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/a...lackPastel.jpg

Same animal as an adult with one of the offsprings he sired

    http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/a...Generation.jpg

Now remember some black pastels may look more like cinny as well (I hatched out a very light color Black Pastel a few years back) in the end it's really a matter of buying the animal that's speak to YOU, one that might appeal to one person may not appeal to another.

And don't hesitate to ask for more pictures with better lighting as well.

Now what do I look for? Contrast and I am a sucker for striping on the back.
