Can anyone ID?

My wife this guy in our room while cleaning. He's a pretty good size, 2 or 3 inches. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/26/ubyju6ep.jpg this is the first one I've seen in California before! I use to catch them in AZ when I would visit my uncle.

Looks like a Bark Scorpion to me. Pretty common in AZ, NV, and Southern Cali. Where about in Cali are you?

Could be a hairy or more likely stripe tailed, but difficult to tell from that picture. I would say to be careful and return him to an unpopulated area near where you live. They won't kill you (unless you have allergic reaction to their sting); however, you will be sick as a dog for a few days if you get tagged.

Our dog got stung by something a while back and her whole head swelled up really bad. .. Could it have been one of these guys? The vet didn't know what it was.

I am leaning toward Stripe Tail, but I am definitely no expert. Either way, I would venture to guess that is most likely the culprit in San Diego. We had a family dog we believe got stung by a bark here in Vegas, and he pretty much slept, some vomiting, and had no appetite for about 3 days. I didn't notice any major swelling, but we took him to the vet, and the vet too had no idea. Shortly thereafter we started finding a few scorpions around the house. I remembered when a friend of mine got tagged as a kid, and he too had very similar symptoms. Thus we figured that was most likely the cause.

Sorry to hear about your pooch. Hopefully he is ok now or on the road to recovery.

Oh yeah, they are much more common here in Vegas, but I invested in a backlight flashlight a while back. The kids and I enjoy night scorpion hunts every couple weeks during this time of year. They glow big time in the black light, and are impossible to miss. We collect them in Tupperware, then go 4x4ing the next day to release them far from home.

That sounds like fun! Our dog was fine after a few days also. I think we might get a black light and do the same =P

It is a little creepy, but addicting. Plus, the kids really enjoy it and it is population control around my neighborhood :)

I'm no good at ID'ing scorpions, but I they are actually pretty common in Southern Cali, if you know where to look. ;)
At work we find them ALL the time in our herp arrays.
