Can 2 UTH's be used for ball python enclosures?
Hey there folks i just got my Ball python about 3 weeks ago he is eating find just took his second meal last night (6/21/13) so he is eating fine but im a little worried about my temps on the hot side my thermometer fluctuates from 77-80F degrees during the day and will drop to 75F degrees at night my cool side stays around 77F degrees. i believe the cool side is fine but my hot side im worried about. I use a 36x18x18 exo terra enclosure. I was thinking of using 2 UTH's one at the bottom and one on the side on the hot side of the enclosure and i do have a thermostat made by Zilla. Also i don't think my humidity levels are correct says its at 79% and my hygrometer is on the cool side. I do use a towel on top of the cage because i have a mesh top so i heard keeping a towel covering 3/4of the tank would help keep the heat and humidity in. My BP seems find though hides during the day has been eating and even is calm when i handle him so i figured im doing something right lol. I just want to make sure my temps are correct. and and all advice and suggestions would help thanks a lot.

Just get a second thermostat and you're good to go. :)

However, I might recommend getting a small lamp on a dimmer, though. UTH isn't going to raise your ambients much. And make sure you're taking temps with an IR gun, or a digital thermometer.

ok i will look into that thanks, and i do have 2 digital thermometers both made by exo terra, but i will definitely look into an IR gun not the first time someone has mentioned those

IR guns are the BEST, and believe it or not, you can get them cheaply. Mine was something like $13 shipped from amazon.

I have an exo terra 36x18x18 for my big normal male.

I used to have it heated with two 11x17 heat pads and a 60 watt ceramic heat emitter. I also have a single repti glo bulb fixture for viewing light. The heat mats were set on separate thermostats so one heated the floor to 92 and the other to 82.

It worked fine, but I discovered it stayed around 78 even without it and the snake is healthy with just one mat and the heat emitter.

Definitely get a bulb or ceramic heat emitter to heat the ambient air because that's a big open tank. I also covered the top in foil and black duct tape everywhere except below the heat lamp and daylight.

With temps that cool I would look at the cool side and room ambients. That may be the issue adding more power might not be a solution.

Thanks for the advice. I have two 11 x 17 heat pads right now but on the same thermostat temps on the hot side are going from 85F-90F degrees and my cool side is 77F-78f humidity seems to average 60% right now and i just have a towel covering half the top but i did hear that foil and tape work well for keeping in humidity. as for lighting i currently don't use any just when i feed him i have a 75W night heat lamp made by exo terra. If i do use a heat lamp should i put it also on the hot side of the tank or on the cool side.
