    Zoo med UTH & Herpstat 2 ?'s
I have a 20 gal L setup that had a Zoo med UTH on one side so I decided to use it instead of swapping it out. I have it hooked to my Herpstat 2 and have it set on 90 (I have the probe on the glass in the tank so it is on the surface the snake can come in contact with.

For some reason this will heat up to 89.7 and the Herpstat will shut power to it and it will continue to climb to 93.5 on a consistent basis. Any one else have any issues like this?

I have another set up basically the set the same way on the other side of the stat and it never goes above 90.7.

Just curious if it is just a zoo med climb rate thing or if something else is going on.

    Thanks

Have you tried maybe restarting the herpstat? There should be directions on the website.

Also, 93 isn't TOO bad. Just don't let it go over 95 IMO.

Problem #1: the probe should be between the UTH and the glass so the snake cannot dislodge it.

I second calling Spyder Robotics and asking if they know what's going on. I have a herpstat 2 and I don't have that issue. Mine holds at a steady temperature.

To add to what BHPReptiles mentioned, the probe from the thermostat should be on the outside of the enclosure. Not only can the snake dislodge it, it can also pee on it or spill water on the probe, whichever happens, this would cause your probe to sense a lower temp and cause your UTH to spike in temp. I would recommend using the thermostat to regulate the temps and then use either a IR gun or a wired thermometer to verify the temps your UTH is putting out.

I would also double check your output mode, if its not already, set it to dimming, it could be set to cooling mode, when this mode is enabled this will simulate a on/off style thermostat, this could explain what you are experiencing.

I was instructed by others on here to have the probe on top of the glass and thought that was odd. I will move both of those today then.

With the temp guns, if I spot check the glass above the heat mat will I be getting the temp of the glass or will it go through the glass and give me the temp of the mat? I have never used one but have one on order.

The stat is set to dimming, with night cycle option off. I will reset it to default and reprogram it after I move the probes.

    Thanks

I second guess using IR guns with a glass enclosure due to the reflection from the IR beam. I use the below thermometer, I know some have mentioned not using batteries inside the enclosure due to corrosion, I have be using this setup for over a year, haven't had any issues with the battery leaking or corroding. I place the outdoor probe on the inside directly about the UTH on the inside.

I have a similar acurite in on the cool side. I have other digitals I can use but I am curious as what the difference is as I will place that probe in the same spot.

Moved probes, defaulted to factory and then reset specs and working like a champ now!
