Misting question

I am using aspen for substrate in a rack. Do I spray the tub or the substrate or both? I figured a little on the substrate will be ok. I just keep an eye out for mould. I used to use cypress in my cage but now that I have moved to a rack aspen is better. It is kind of a dumb question but it didn't come up in the few searches I did.

It should be fine I use aspen as well in my rack system and never have a problem. I usually only mist if someone is going into shed though ill mist them twice a day until they shed other than that I have no problems with humidity hope this helps

So far I have just misted the bedding a little (not wet just very slightly damp). Then it holds 50-60% for a almost a week. It just dipps down dipped down to 30 last night so I thought I would ask. I am asking because I have read aspen can mould easily and I didn't have that concern when I was using cypress mulch.

I use aspen and mist EVERYTHING really good about once a week. If they are going to shed, I spray about every other day.

I like aspen a lot. I especially like that I can get a big compressed bag for $15CAN. It is the stuff for hampsterscbut it is 100% aspen just bigger savings than the tiny reptile bags of aspen.

The compressed bag does more than 6 41qt tubs and the $20 "reptile" would only do 1 or two tubs.

you never have to mist it's ball pythons for christ's sake! they don't really care about humidity .. however I do mist once when they are pre-shed (when I see them having blue eyes) other than that it is completely unnecessary to ever mist them - in my experience atleast

I can only agree with that statement if the rack is well built and doesn't leak out all of the humidity.
My racks have little room for air to escape so I have to vent them with holes.
I never mist even in shed, just push the water bowl back over the hot spot and it's all good.
I'm not a fan of misting ball pythons, but if you have poorly designed racks that leak, or if you live in a zone with little humidity then misting is somewhat necessary.

Just keep your ball python in low humidity for too long and after some vet bills you might change your mind about keeping up the humidity ...

I like to keep my humidity as recommended, between 50-60%. I also had to put holes into the tubs and I wanted enough where the air is exchanging. Stale air and humidity breed bacteria. I only have to mist the tub once or twice a week. Once warm weather hits again the furnace won't be drying out the air so much and I won't have to mist as much. I just know aspen is prone to mould and I didn't know if it was safe to mist it directly it just the sides of the tub. I have only been using it for a month or so.

I spray everything when I mist. I even spray the interior of the hide when I have one in shed.

sasT just cruise Craigslist and look at all the bp having terrible sheds then say that bp don't care about humidity. I'm not sure how an experienced keeper could make a statement like you did.

ive got an adult bp in a 55g tank and I mist once a day. I just spray the walls of the tank a little.

they're not from a desert environment so they DO need some humidity.
