Breeding in an Apartment - Illegal??

I'm in the process of finding a new apartment and also planning for future BP breeding, hoping to try my first round in the upcoming season. It was just brought to my attention that it may not be legal to breed snakes in an apartment in California. Anyone know if this is true or not??

Also, those of you who are in an apartment with your snakes (breeding or not), are they approved by your landlord? I'm worried about the difficulty of finding a landlord that will be okay with my animals. I'm looking for pet-friendly places anyway for a dog, but that doesn't always mean snake-friendly.

I know I'm not in your area, but my family is in rentals, as far as the lease agreement we use, it just mentions cats, dogs, and aquariums above ten gallons on the second floor (if a two story), and animals weighing more then 20 pounds, I don't see why in most places it would be a problem, to me it is kinda like if you breed different fish, or a couple birds. Just my opinion, I wish you the best of luck! Please keep us updated!

It could be a zoning issue, but it is really going to depend on exactly where you are. Some cities have restrictions on running a business, number of animals, etc.

I've lived in NC and Boston. Almost every apt complex does not allow them. Make sure before you sign anything

You'll want to check the lease, which you can request a copy before signing, and check your local ordinances. It's a technicality, but no language is a go ahead signal in leases and ordinances.

I'm in CA and breed rodents and snakes in my apartment.
My management doesn't know exactly what I have or how many. But they are aware that I have caged pets. Any type of caged pet in my apartment complex is allowed. But they didn't ask to know exactly what. They said as long as nobody complains, they have no issue. They're only concerned with cats and dogs, which have to be put on the lease. All other animals are excluded from lease.

However, my town is really open to keeping pets. The number 1 vet school in the country and animal based university are here so its expected.

Thanks everyone for your responses. The person I was speaking to didn't realize that I don't plan to run a business out of my apartment, so zoning and licensing shouldn't be an issue. satomi, it's nice to know that at least somewhere in CA there are animal-friendly places. I only hope that's what I'm able to find. In my opinion, if they're listed as pet-friendly, then that should include all pets unconditionally. It would be miserable if I have to declare every animal I have and every new snake I get...

I think the key here is to not ask "Do you allow snakes". Instead, ask for a copy of their pet policy. As Kodieh said, silence is consent (IMO). Be considerate of your neighbors (probably best that they not even know about hem), and you shouldn't have problems.

It's because the world is full of morons and people fear snakes, why? They don't have enough sense to keep their minds open so they just automatically declare snakes trouble or evil or whatever the case may be.

About a week or so ago somebody posted a picture on facebook of a snake they killed, and wanted to know what kind it was. People shouldn't even comment unless they know what they're talking about, but people went from saying copper head, cotton mouth, corn snake, king snake and it was a harmless water snake. Then some people said: The best kind of snake, a dead snake. Which I replied to their comments: I hope your dog bites your face off. That was a bit off topic, but it was a point to my general census that people don't understand snakes.

Also it's not like a snake will chase you to bite you, but a dog can. Anyways, good luck with your search though.

This was basically what I was getting at - is it okay to just say nothing? (unless of course the lease specifically calls out snakes). I guess then my question is: if silence is consent and one day the landlord inspects my place or has to get in to fix a leak, etc. and sees a wall of snakes - does he have a case against me? I'm just so overly paranoid cause they're my babies :P

And yes - I'll try not to get heated about this, but this is the ultimate issue. Ignorance. It makes me want to explode. I'm going to stop there before I do explode :taz: I've gotten a lot of people to face their fears with snakes and alligators and been able to get each of them to touch and even hold them and even though they're always scared - they're smiling.;) And so many people (myself included) think little hamsters and mice (and dogs, as you said!) are sooo cute - but I am FAR more afraid of getting bitten by a teeny little hamster than I am a snake - those suckers hurt!! Anyway, yes....ignorance is maddening.
