How Does A Thermostat Work With UTH?
Hello everyone, dumb question here, but should I shell out $100 on a thermostat for my Albino Ball Python so she won't get burned? Also how do the thermostats work? Do they shut off at a certain temp as to not harm your BP? Thanks again everyone! Remember, I'm a noob so be nice!

    Absolutely, without question. :gj:

They keep the temp of the heat mat steady at the desired temp you plug in.

So if I am using an UTH source I should put the probe right on the mat correct? Also my UTH pad heats 1/3 of my tank, is that enough?

    Thanks!!

    Yes and yes.

What type of enclosure are you using?

Yes. You want your stat probe outside the enclosure, between the bottom of the tank and the sticky side of the UTH. You want your thermometer inside the enclosure against the bottom (I use hot glue to secure it, never use tape) but not directly over the place that the thermostat probe is. Off to the side a little is fine, but right on top will give you false readings. Then you adjust your thermostat temperatures until your thermometer probe is reading your desired temp. Usually you'll need to set your thermostat between 92 and 98 degrees to achieve an 88-92 degree hot spot, but it depends on the placement of your probes and the temperature of the enclosure and the probe. It's best to play with it when there's no snake in the enclosure, but if you're careful and go slow, you shouldn't have a problem with your temps being too high.

Proportional tstats(Herpstats) regulate the mat at a desired temp.

On/Off(Hydro farm, Ranco) types will turn off the mat when it reaches a certain temp and turn it back in when it gets too cool.

Mike, the setup is a basic tank setup with a screen top.

OP, DEFINITELY spend the $100 on a herpstat. A thermostat is the best investment you can make for your snake! Once you plug the UTH into the thermostat and secure the probe between the heat mat and the glass bottom (on the outside of the tank), you will set the thermostat to a certain temp (say 90*). What that thermostat will do is keep the UTH set at 90* to keep a constant hot spot.

If you are willing/able to spend the money on a Herpstat, it is absolutely 100% worth it, and I highly recommend it. We have an older Herpstat 1, and just got a Herpstat 4. We love ours. If you decide to go the inexpensive route, this one is decent:

Reptimed?? You mean ZooMed? If so don't bother. For $30 you can get a hydrofarm which is better than nothing.
