Pied, Leopard Pied, or Dinker Pied??
I got this little 1.0 Pied a few months back for a song locally. Unknown lineage from a local shop. They could not sell him because he was low white. $250 and he was mine. I just figured I'd put some weight on him and turn him over, or keep him to replace my proven 1.0 Pied at 1800g. My big Pied is a stud and has locked every time I have paired him this year. He will likely stay on as a good breeder here until someone else proves him to be a better breeder.

Anyways... the little 1.0 Pied has always seemed to have something going on with him.... as in another morph mixed in there. I started showing a few breeders his pic and 4/5 feel he looks highly "Leopard-ish". Apparently there are a lot of Leopard Pieds that get passed off as regular Pieds because the Pied hides their Leopard pattern somewhat. My big Pied came from Peter Kahl via a local breeder who deals with him and also works with Lepoard Pieds. Peter Kahl supposedly produced the first Leopard Pied. Their feeling is that I should try to prove him out with a Normal something non-Pied to see if I get some obvious Leopards.

I've seen him put on some good weight and he is now 390+g and eats great. Friendly as a baby. With each shed he gets more orange blushing and highlights around his white back half. I hadn't really starting questioning his looks till I decided to take some pics of him recently to post for sale.

Just wanted to get some opinions from anyone who has dealt with Leopard Pieds. This guy looks like a little "Dinker" Pied. I have a 0.1 pastel for him this fall.

Opinions?? He looks awfully similiar to some Leopard Pieds on WOBP.

Just for comparison- he looks nothing like my 1.0 Pied and either of my 0.2 Pieds. He surely has something unique about him.

Looks like a regular pied to me. Pieds brown out and dull a lot as they age compared to when they are younger and tend to lose that orange/yellow color. To me just looks like he has that younger glow to him.

Nice pied either way, im no expert when It comes to leopards. Regardless of what anyone says breed him and see what happens and then you'll know :).

It is not his color- it's his pattern.

Here is a picture of a Loepard Pied from Peter Kahl. Surely similiar to my little guy, and quite different pattern from my other 3 Pieds.

Again, still looks like a pied to me. Keep in mind that the pied gene is also a pattern gene as well; this is really obvious in lower white pieds in large areas that aren't white.

It's possible its a leopard, but unlikely.

I know a few local breeders here who deal in Leopards and Leopard pieds, so I've seen quite a few. While your little guy does have a bit of a ??? to him. I really don't see anything that just says "leopard pied" to me. Now, I will be the first to admit, I do not own nor do a breed Leopards and leopard pieds, so I am not an expert by any means. But in the dozens I have seen from three different local breeders, he just doesn't have the definite leopard look to him. Not that it isn't possible, but he just doesn't jump out and say leopard to me. I for one would hold on to him long enough to get a clutch sired by him, and that will remove any doubt.

That' the plan as of now. I have a 0.1 Pastel I can throw him to next year. Het Pieds never killed anyone, especially Pastel Het Peids if I hit a few...ehhmm, females :)
