50% SD Retic Growth Update

Alright guys, I really want to sit down and write a lot on the subject of dwarf and super dwarf retics for anyone that is really looking into these amazing animals. So give me some time and I'll put it together for you guys if you want the information. (can also check www.reptileexperts.com/giants.htm)

Superdwarf crosses are rising in popularity, but the obvious big questions is - how big?? And honestly, I'm seeing a lot of variation in the hobby, including a lot of different growth speeds. So I've been diligently tracking the progress of my 2012 Tiger 50% Kalatoa (SD) probable het Albino girl and will continue to track it over the next year as she hits maturity. Side note: I have an adult male tiger of the same blood line that is roughly 3 meters in length which is nearly the size of a mainland male slow raised. Of course, his growth potential seems to be fully maxed out now, but he may surprise me and continue packing on size as he pounds his rabbits. None the less let's see some updates for today and a flashback of when she was younger.

Fast Foward to this morning, May 1st, 2013 sorry for the blurry shot, I had just bathed her after she destroyed her cage and decided to roll around in it last night. . . Current Weight, 1300 grams fully empty.

New exciting stuff happening in the retic world, and a lot of stuff going on with my collection. I can't wait to be offering a lot of things to the retic world, 75% SD Platty Anery Retics will hopefully be produced in house by this time next year. So keep posted world!

Maaan, if only they hadn't put Retics on that silly Lacey Act... I would be asking you to send a baby my way one day. :(

I love how Retics really seem to LOOK at you. Like, not just "oh, there's a thing here"; it's like they look at you and you can see them thinking things through. Makes me think of the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park. :P

They are very intelligent snakes in comparison to many of the other python species kept in captivity. But again, we were all fortunate that the Lacey act did not pass for retics. It was turned down on vote and no longer part of the issue. There are still bans trying to be put into place, but for now the hobby is safe, and I can ship to all states except where prohibited by state or local law (FL - and OH / NY without proof of permits / insurance).

And when I get back from South America at the end of May I can show off this girls 2013 Sister who will be arriving.

... I have no idea what I was thinking. I just wrote a report about the snakes that were and weren't on the Lacey Act. Color me embarassed. :P I'm pretty sure I was thinking of Rock Pythons but picturing Retics.

But that's good news for me! :D I figure SDs are a good way to get into the larger snakes when I'm ready, since I hear they only average around 8ft but still have the Retic personality.

8' is definitely a safe bet for males, and females for 75% SD, but a 50% SD female like this has ample growth potential still. I cut her food back to keep her lean and growing slow from here out based on Travis Kubes thoughts when I discussed it with him. But apparently, Bob Clark has some female 50% SD girls that are 14'!

How large would a non-dwarf retic female get? I know they get huge, but how huge?

Mainlaind (no dwarf / super dwarf influence) generally stay around 15-17', when you go into specific locales such as the Sulas they get upwards of 18+'. Then you have the mutations - Tiger SEEMS to have an influence in size. But we believe that to be because the tiger mutation was originally a sula stock. But we have not gotten any confirmations on this. But Sula Tigers are some of the largest growing of the retics and are the ones who are plastered as these 20+' retics.

While retics can exceed 20' it is not too common! Which makes 8-10' a Super Dwarf and 12' a Dwarf by comparison ;-)
