How many ASFs will go into...
    Hi,
I'm planning on starting my own ASF breeding colony, and need a bit of advice. I used to keep pet rats, and I have a cage like this:

The dimensions are: inches x 27 inches wide x 18 inches deep

How many ASFs would you say I can house in there? I'm planning on getting a starting colony of different ages, as I need some for current feeding, but it would be good to know if I can keep them all in one for the time being....

You can keep a lot in there but baby's will escape through the hole's, there to big you will have mess with it a bit if your going to use it for ASF's.

Quarter inch mesh is a must.

Thanks, I was wondering about that too! Do you think it would be ok for growers? Let's say starting from smalls (12g), growing on bigger. That would be probably for one sex only, just to make sure i don't get any accidents... I would sort out a proper breeding quarters later on...

you could fit maybe 1.7 in there but the babies will get out. you could probably use that as a weanling cage just make sure they're not to small for the holes.

As a general rule, I always go by if they can fit thier head through, the rest can follow. You could use plastic tubs with most of the lid cut out and replaced with 1/4" mesh for the breeding tubs and that cage for a grow-out cage maybe?

Plastic tubs for multis? I wouldn't lol they chew through that with ease. I thought they would be fine the first few times but I learnt pretty quick and chasing 5/6 multis about is no fun!!

What's the benefits of feeding ASF as opposed to your average feeder rats? Ive never seen ASF available in my area just curious?

You can buy the mesh in a roll and add it to your existing panels.

Snakes seem to like them more, plus they are not as fatty as rats.
