Can you tell if the rat is pregnant?

Once she hits about 12 to 16 days along, yes. Like any pregnant female, she'll start getting a belly bulge. The further along she is, the bigger the bulge. Just before the birth, she'll usually look like she's going to explode.

For sure! She will stop running around and start waddling :D

Especially when they look like they ate a golf ball :)

When I was breeding rats it was always very obvious when they were pregnant. They look pear-shaped.
