Lights

Hello, I have two light fixtures in the T8 cages because my girlfriend wants her ball pythons in the living room and in view. We use day light fluorescent bulb and she likes the black light bulb for night time. However, the black light is behind a plastic cover and looks "blue."

I'm not 100% sure if black light is safe to use? Or should we get a true blue fluorescent light? Or perhaps a red one?

Thoughts?

The night time heat lamp bulbs give off a blueish light that can even look purple so I think it should be fine. Just don't use one that is to bright. It should provide just enough light for you to see, and I don't mean well.

Black lights are a real slippery term. True black lights and very bad for YOUR eyes. Your snake has a UV coating on their eyes, you don't (UVa + UVb blocking sunglasses...) if it is a UV bulb you should replace it with a blue one. Sometimes bulbs that are deep blue are called UV short of a meter it is hard to tell the packaging should let you know. If it makes glow in the dark stuff go crazy and shirts go that UV effect I personally would replace it. Deep blue is my choice , heat (IR) is only a few nM longer than deep red, pythons hunt with IR, deep red is close to the wavelengh they are 'tuned' for.

I use the Eco Terra "moonlight" bulbs in my tank to help regulate ambient air temp. No ill effects so far. That said, I don't believe they're ACTUAL black lights. They DO make bright colors glow and UV inks react to them.
