Moving up in the world

So after me and my fiancé finally moved out into our first apartment we have already decided 2 bedrooms is not nearly enough space. #1 because the second bedroom houses our washer and dryer and #2 along with my animals in there it's also our pantry too since we hardly have any cupboard space.

Well, me and her have been doing a lot of talking and we decided that we are going to go and get a loan and build a house! Nothing huge, we found a home building package that we like that's 1,400ish square feet and 3 bedrooms with and attached 2 stall garage.

So yet again this means I have to wait even longer to have my ball pythons, but at least I can actually have a WHOLE room to my reptiles and build the house to have a separate thermostat for that room.

We will be cutting several corners to cut cost, because my fiancés pretty much whole family are carpenters and said they would help for a little of nothing, we are going electric heat, and a bunch of other little things.

We are both very excited and I just wanted to share my venture with you guys and gals. Oh! Also her parents are selling us 2ish acres of land to build on for $1, yes $1. Gotta love having connections :)

I know you're trying to save money here, but if you do go with electric heat then your electric bill during the winter is going to be astronomical compared to the initial amount you save by going with it. I lived in Rhode Island for most of my life, and I'd expect NY has similar winters. If you look into it, I'm sure there are some cheap heaters/boilers that you could use in place of electric. Just my two cents, it is your house lol. Either way, good luck on the build and congrats!

If you wanna save money put in a wood stove haha. Electric heat will kill you. Lookup any sort of "going green" initiatives your state may have too. Putting in certain things may cost you a bit more but could be big tax breaks.

Wood heat is a great cheap way to heat a house as long as you have the supply of trees and are motivated enough to have your giant winter pile cut like I'm talking huge. I know a guy that has a wood furnace out side his house and all the heat is pumped in to it, he also has fire places in the living room, and his master bedroom

I've lived in a wood stove heated house for years and honestly it seems more costly because of having to by cords of wood all the time. We will definitely look more into it but honestly I know our apartment is not near the size of the house we are planning but I keep the heat at 80 degrees and have all winter and our electric bill with that, the tv being on pretty much 24/7, and our various other electronics running our bill at the most has been $150 for the month.

Thanks for the tips though everyone. We are really excited to start this project. Just need to get the finances in order and get what we need.
