    Today's the day!
My butter pastel male arrives today...my first snake! I'm pretty excited...like the night before Christmas, back when I got toys for Christmas, it's been a long time since those days lol.

He looks big in the picture, but he's only about 150g.
I went to Petco to get food for him, but they didn't have rat pups, they only carry small rats (40g) so I can't feed him those yet.

I got adult mice instead (19g), those should be more appropriate, but I want to get him on rats asap.
The online rodent suppliers supply in bulk and have crazy expensive shipping rates. I don't need 50 rat pups lol...I'd think he would outgrow them before he finished them all.

Here's a pic of the tank:

This is my first post, I've been reading up on here for a while now, so thanks for all the great info! :D

When you only have one or two snakes, I love a good "show" enclosure. Obviously if you have more, you're not going to have such an elaborate set up and tubs come in much handier. I think that is a GREAT enclosure (maybe a tad on the big side if the BP is a newer/late 2012), but she'll grow into it and it appears it has a lot of hiding spots/plants to help the little guy feel more secure. Just make sure you keep an eye on temps/humidity as the taller/bigger aquariums are a little harder to keep spot on...

But congrats on the new pick up.

Yeah, I'm only keeping one snake at the moment...at least for as long as I can resist the urge hehe.

I was worried that the tank would be too big too, but we'll see how he does with it.
When I set him down in it, he sat there a second, let out a yawn & began exploring.

The interesting thing is that he is using the temple as a hide lol.

I didn't see that one coming, I didn't think there was enough room in there for him, but I was wrong! He went in from the ground level right side, then later on he poked his head out the front door, then a few seconds later out the 2nd floor.

I was a little worried he'd stay in there since the temperature can't be warm enough in there (base is kinda thick), but I caught him coming out & went to snap a pic and he backed that ass up quick! lol
Pretty amazing how fast they can reverse...he shot back up inside the temple. I went into the office, so he's free to explore now without me bugging him. :)

Good point about the temps/humidity. The glass actually makes it easier to keep humidity up, but temps are a bit of a challenge. Especially since the glass is pretty thick.
I had a week or two to prep though, so I've been checking out the spots with my temp gun pretty often.

I have a thermostat and a thermometer/hygrometer with 2 probes on the way to help keep temps steady.

    Thanks for the replies!

Nice to see you did your homework and really went out of your way to make sure your husbandry was in shape BEFORE bringing your snake home. No doubt he'll have a good keeper :gj:

Thanks! It's a ton of YouTube videos and forums like this with posters like you guys that make it easy to research.

I saw him yawn twice...is yawning pretty common? Maybe he's just jet lagged from his flight from Pennsylvania hehe.

Hope he relaxes some and doesn't spend too much time in the hide, it's not properly heated. The half log has the UTH under it...if he keeps it up, I may have to plug up the windows and close down Hotel Angkor Wat!

I've heard that constant yawning can be a sign of a possible respiratory infection. However I wouldn't worry about anything yet. He has had a stressful few days and needs some time to adjust to his new environment. Just keep an eye on him and make sure the the temps and humidity are correct.

    EDIT:
Here's another post concerning frequent yawning http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...?122143-*yawn*
