Real Plants in the cage

I have two ball pythons in a fairly large cage and I would like to add a few real plants. Can anyone suggest any type of plants that would be good for this?

Check the ASPCA site -- if you scroll down you'll see links to both their toxic plants list and non-toxic plants list. With ball pythons, you don't have to worry about those that are only toxic if ingested, at least if you feed outside the cage. You do need to worry about those that are toxic on contact, including those with toxic sap as the snake will occasionally break off branches or leaves.

Also, despite any controversy over Melissa Kaplan, her site has an excellent resource on plants specifically for reptile keepers.

Live plants isn't a good idea in a BP's cage....they are ground-dwellers and their heavy bodies will destroy any plants you put in there. Plus UV light is needed to grow most plants and too much light can stress your BP out.

On a side note, I grew Pothos plants hydroponically in some of my tropical snakes' cages for a while.

I agree with Mr. Beard on this one a BP would probably smash your live plants plus you'd have to get one of those pricey bulbs we noctournal owners don't have to worry about :) to give it UV. There are actually a lot of nice plastic plants out there - I found some sweet ones at PetSmart in the fish tank section. I'd wash them first to get that plastic-ey smell off, my guy seemed to be less afraid of them after I did that. Somebody around here just posted a pic of a SWEET cage set-up = lots of plants I'll see if I can dig up the link!

Plastic plants and vines are great they dont need any water they never die and some look pretty good under a black light.

I buy silk vines from Wal-Mart for my ATB cages....they only cost $3 for a roll thats like 3-4 feet long.

Yeah with a Ball Python I don't think plants would work. Bob at night likes to crawl around and knock over his Temp/Humidty monitor almost every morning I have to go in and set it back upright. I would think that if I had plants in there they would get tore up and smashed.

Now my King loves his little fake tree he likes to sit in the plastic leaves and pretend he is a arboreal tree snake.
