Can a BP escape a proper rack?
I have convinced the gf to let me start a little project and have my super pastel het clown male and pastel het clown female arriving soon. I've spent a decent amount of time on here looking for someone talking about the security of a snake in a rack so I can assure her that they work. Haven't had much luck so I figured I'd ask myself. If a homemade rack is set up properly, whether it be melamine, pvc, xpvc etc... with correct size tub for the size of snake and correct spacing between tub and rack, what is the chance of the snake escaping? Aside from my own failure to close tub etc..

I know there's always a chance because some are escape artists but realistically...?

While you can never be 100% sure that a BP won't escape a quality rack be it professionally made or home made, it is pretty rare. You are far more likely to forget to push a tub in than have a BP escape on their own. Some BP's can push tubs open so you should look into securing the tubs with something like this:

Note the white pegs in front of the tubs that prevent them from sliding out.

Keep the gap between the tub and the top of the shelf under 1/4" 1/8" would be even better.

That's what I have and with the white peg stoppers in front it has helped convince my GF that the snakes won't get out (knock on wood).

I have that rack and their CB-70 rack. I've not had an escape yet. I love the pegs. It offers the other people in my house a little more security...especially since my DIY rack allowed two snake escapes because of my poor design before I fixed it.

They are GREAT racks! I'll be ordering two more sweaterbox racks this summer to replace my 8 tub DIY rack. The DIY rack will be transformed into a hatchling rack where the tubs have locking lids.
