Rack and Tub size???

Hey guys,

I picked up a 6 bin 28 quart rack from a buddy. However, the snakes I am looking at getting will all be under 400 grams and 2012 hatch dates.

Looking around 28 quart is WAY bigger than needed for them at this size, but I dont want to have to modify this rack or build a new one.

Question is, does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make this work with minimal stress on the snake?

- more hide spots?
- Maybe try to divide the tub in half and have the snake use the half with the flexwatt(obviously)?

Depends on how many snakes you have but you can add more hides if necessary or buy tub dividers from c-serpents. FYI, I've kept balls under 400g in 28qt tubs without issues.

Sometimes the tubs in a certain series are the same height; Sterilite tubs with the purple handles for example. the 6 quart, 15 quart, and the 28 are all within a quarter inch of each other. I'm kinda odd, but I use the lids with mine; your rack was probably designed to be used without lids. I'd try to find a smaller tub that is the same height as the 28's you are using, but that's just me. More hides would work as well as adding stuff to take up extra space. I use newspaper for a substrate, and if one of mine is acting stressed, I'll add balls of crumpled up paper to the tub for them to crawl around and hide under.


In this pic, I have 28 qt tubs in all but the second shelf. On the second shelf, they are 15 qt.

Thanks for the response. I only plan to start out with 2-3 snakes so I have enough bin space, but was just making sure that the 28qt wasnt going to be overkill for a small BP.

I will just add some additional hide spots!

I dont use lids so the height would have to be darn close to the 28 quart, so maybe i can do a little shopping until they arrive. I will keep on eye out on them if i have to use the 28 quart to make sure they dont seem too stressed out.

What I would do is take a bunch of newspaper, crumple it up and put it all over the tub. I kept a tiny hatchling in a 41 quart, and she started out feeding with minimal issues (I wouldn't recommend this, but it works well in a pinch) Just clutter up the tubs a lot, and you should be fine.

We raise all of our hold backs in 28 or 32 quart tubs and they thrive :)
As soon as they are eating well, like 5-6 meals or more in a 6qt tub, they go into the 28qt rack.
