Need help with my snakes right eye. HELP!!!

We just recently were given a Female Ball Python and noticed her eyes had the eyecaps still on them, we've been soaking her in luke-warm water and the left one fell off just fine but the right one seems to be either stuck or infected, any ideas on how we can help rid her of this eyecap. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

That looks like someone took off a retained spectacle that wasn't there.

It is definitely infected and the snake will probably lose the eye - or at least the sight in it.

It needs a good reptile vet as son as you can.

It can't be treated at home or anything but you do need to try and keep it clean - I recommend papertowels as a substrate and a high humidity if possible without the substrate being wet.

If you tell us whereabouts you are maybe someone can recommend a good local vet.

We're in Casa Grande, AZ. We don't have much money for a vet. How much would it cost to get her fixed up, I feel sorry for the poor girl. Thanks

Use one of those rubber sowing thimbles to try and gently rub the retained shed off. Make sure you do this after letting the snake soak or preferable after sitting him in a humidity box for 45 min or so. The eyecup should come off without to much Trouble. If its not coming off after that then I would say vet visit time. :/

Do NOT mess with that eye anymore. A vet visit is definitely in order, find an exotic vet (an actual reptile vet, not a dog/cat vet) in your area and start calling around for prices. Some vets charge more than others, mine who I go to is fairly cheap at $32/visit without any additional medication or whatnot.

Uh NO!
Don't ever mess with eyecaps!
Get that snake to a vet, as it looks like infection.

We're looking up Herp Vets to see where we can take her...I'll post soon to let you guys know the results...Just goes to show ya when some people don't take care of their animals what can happen I guess, Really disappointing :(

I personally have never had to remove eyecaps but so you know I wasn't just throwing out random info here's the video. Many people in this forum have a lot more experience then I myself have so if they say vet visit that's probably the best idea. :) hope everything works out.

But the snake in question is what happens when people do that without making certain there is a stuck eyecap to remove. Basically it leaves the eye completely exposed and unprotected and it nearly always gets infected. :(

Since a stuck eyecap really isn't that big a deal in comparison we normally tell people not to try and remocve it just make sure the humidity is right for the next shed. Or use something like a damp pillowcase that won't tear the living spectacle off an eye.

People can make mistakes easily so you get used to being cautions with advice.

From the looks of it, there is no eye shed cap or any sort of live membrane cap on that snake. Like previously mentioned, its likely someone tried removing what they thought was an eye cap and removed the protective casing of the actual eye. :(

Either way, cap or no cap, never mess with the eyes. You can do more harm than good.


OP: I know you're disappointed. But I am personally grateful you got this guy out of a bad hands and trying to help him to the best of your ability.
