How big to Columbian Red Tails get???

Curious how big Columbians get.... Heard. that Suriname's get 9-10ft...definitely want to add a boa to the collection but concerned about temperament and size with 4 small children at home.

If you are concerned about the size, just get yourself a male, they only tend to be 6-7' generally and the females may get larger. There are a few types of boa you could look into that don't get as big such as Hog Island boas. Happy hunting and I'm sure others will be on here offering some good advice and info :)

Males do stay smaller with many not exceeding 6 ft. There are many localities that are even smaller. Nicaraguans, Sonorans, Hog Islands and most of the other insular subspecies stay around 5-ish ft. Tarahumara Mountain and Pearl Islands are even smaller at around 4 ft.

As far as temperament, generally most BCIs are really laid back and gentle. Nicaraguans and Central Americans can be somewhat testier than the average Colombian so I might stear clear of them if you want you kids to be able to handle it eventually. The insular subspecies are much like the Colombians and are quite good. Either way, if you get one as a baby and "grow" with it, you will get to know that boa's personality very well. And if it needs some minor taming down, you'll have plenty of opportunity to do that before it gets bigger. :gj:


Oh! And if those are still too large, you might consider a Rosy boa or Kenyan Sand boa. Both of them average less than 3 ft!

I would go with a male BCI, they tend to stay "smaller'. Personality is great, at least mine, and that seems to be very typical of them. They are so mellow and curious. Very interactive. My daughter is 9, and she handles all the snakes. Although my boas are only around 300 grams right now. I would highly recommend a boa though, they are so much fun. :D
