    Sanana Super Dwarf retic
    Hi guys,

i have been talking to a guy that has got hold of a male retic that he claims was imported from the island of Sanana. These apparently from what he says are natural occuring super dwarfs just as the kayuadis. He claims that the snake is a year old and i saw it the other day and it is the girth of a cornsnake and will be around 2.5 ft in length. Has a beautiful normal coloured pattern but really nice compared to other normal retics ive seen before. He claims there are only 20 snakes from this origin in Europe and the other 19 are owned by some french guy... I wanted to check with you firstly if there is such local as Sanana retics, if its true they are so rare and if they are natural super dwarfs. Unfortunately i wasnt able to get a photo of the animal but i held it and fell in love with it.

Thanks in advance and hope to hear about your thoughts!

I know nothing about Retics, but I am subscribing because I am interested in knowing this. I hope to one day have a super dwarf.

I am pretty deep into the wold of super dwarf and dwarf retics - while europe seems to routinely get new locales, it seems to make some noise in the retic community. I have a friend in europe who works with super dwarfs, I'll shoot him an email and see what he knows, but I'm almost certain that even if it is a new locale - there is not really a way to know for sure how large or small it's size will get. IMO if you are wanting to get a dwarf, stick with the Kalatoa. This is my two year old male Anery. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8213/8...c57fbcd0_b.jpg males stay udner 6' and females under 7-8' and that's a giant. Most pure females won't get above 6, and most pure males will stay below 5'.

Sanana was an unknowns locale to my friend. He went on to say the newest dwarf locale brought in was kupang. I verified that Sanana was a small island isolated from the mainland so that much could be plausible for a SD population I did not go Into the details to look and see where the island was in relation to the proposed migration currents for the mainland retics that spread to these islands. So that is still up in the air.

Sanana would be similar to the species branching that occurred in Jampea locale. Again if they are verifiably from Sanana I'd still be willing to think they are a dwarf species not super dwarf. They would likely have the same environmental factors as jampea. Therefor 8-10 ft on average but 16' possible. Again I'd urge you simply grab a solid known super dwarf like Kalatoa.

As with all dwarfs though you can increase their food and make them bigger. So be prepared.

Thanks for this ^! I love the look of retics but have no desire to have that large of an animal or try to house & feed one as an adult. Nothing at all against them, as they are stunning animals, just not something I would be comfortable keeping. That said, a dwarf of this species is sounding better & better if that's all the larger they average in terms of size.

Thank you so much Reptileexperts! that information was really useful! i will definitely pass on this one then and look for a much safer option. The thing is that the amount of retics in spain is really small so you dont get too much to choose from and hamm show (germany) is not that close to go...

thank you very much for your help

No worries. Try looking up some breeders with the RFUK (reptile forums Uk) I know a few people on there who breed super Jamps and may be able to get them into Spain easily. I'm not too confident in my import export knowledge for that area but unless retics specifically are banned it shouldn't be an issue. You guys have plenty of super dwarf / dwarf options. But in all cases - be prepared for a snake that gets larger and be thankful when it stays small. I have a super dWarf tiger that was less than 100 grams in October. She's now 5' and right under 700 grams! Insane growth for an SD. She has great genetics the difference is simply the fact I am feeding her on a normal retic schedule and she's giving positive healthy growth. So just be prepared!

You still have to be mindful of their feeding aggression. The super dwarf locales are also quite flighty and like to run off from you quick quick. My pure SD is quite a handful sometimes just because sitting still is not his thing. My 50% SD's are much more laid back but also get much larger to the 9-11ft range, while still staying quite thin - think between a BCC and Coastal Carpet Python. I believe there is a retic out there for everyone with our abilities to semi-gauge the size that the outcome will result in. As always though, it's never a guarantee that they will stay small. So buy from trusted keepers, check parental sizes / genetics, and be prepared for it to grow larger than expected. MOST cases where dwarfs get huge is due to keepers buffing them up for breeding and causing them to grow to great sizes too fast. This does in fact stunt their life expectancy so you must also keep that in mind. You can have a jampea stay 9 ft its entire life and be very healthy and long lived, or you can grow that same snake to 14-16' and have it only live 6 years and probably only reproduce one season.
