Small, black bugs found in water bowl
I was going to give my pastel female water and I saw these small black (beetle shaped) bugs in her water bowl, probably around five or six of them. Could these be mites? I looked her over but didnt see anything. If so, how do you treat mites?

Yes little black buggers? Those are mites, get yourself some Provent a mite and use as directed. Clean out everything you have.

Thanks. Can you find that at pet stores or should you order it online? Any specific brand?

I don't think you can buy it in stores, I get mine online. And that is the brand prevent a mite aka Pam, it gets the job done.

Most pet stores carry mite baths for reptiles. I'm not sure of the specifics, because I haven't encountered mites personally, but I know there are some very reliable treatments out there, so don't worry too much! As long as it's taken care of promptly, everything should be fine. I will say she should probably go into QT, because just like fleas, they can spread to the rest of your collection fairly easily...

I had a rescue come in with mites once.
I got some type of mite spray at the pet shop. Until you can pick something up or wait for an order to be shipped, here are a couple of things that can help.

Soak your snake daily for 30 mins. Use a very mild soap, like Dawn. Wash the snake off after the soak. Wash out the tub once or twice a day. Use only newsprint or paper towels for substrate. Change it daily if not twice a day. Wash all bowls and hides along with the tub.
Place a large enough bowl so the snake can soak it self.
I also placed baby oil around the face, eyes and hit pits. While your snake soaks, the mites will move toward the head as it holds it above the water.

She didnt have a bad case and they were knocked out pretty quick.

    Good luck.

Yes those are probably mites, google "ball python mites" and you should be able to see images to confirm. PAM is potent stuff but it gets the job done quick. If you have other snakes you might want to treat them all as it is possible they have spread.

Ah, yes, I don't think that's what my local shop has. I imagine what they carry is probably a generic.

This should help you take care of them. :) This is what we recommend for most folks, and I use the PAM at home as a preventative measure.
