rescuing this little dude (or girl). first boa.

so one of my roommates friends is moving somewhere she can't keep snakes and had to find someone to take her boa on very short notice. i've only kept balls, although my brother has a BCI and i love it. i've had my eyes on a boa as a pet for a while now. all my roommates love my snakes, but they're kept in my room and they wanted a "house" snake.. lol so a free boa to a good home sounded perfect. the girl doesn't know much about it. not sure of its gender or if it's a BCC or BCI. don't even know what size tank she's been keeping it in. all i know is it's getting dropped off at my house today with a tank, a heat lamp, and an UTH and it's about "2 feet long." lol i doubt she has a thermostat and since this was on such short notice i haven't had time to get one or prepare anything, but i figured if she's been keeping the snake in this setup it'll be alright until i can get it a proper set up. we'll see when it gets here. these are the only pictures i have that she sent me. i think he/she is pretty cute. lol

i've read a couple care sheets for boas and picked up a little bit of general knowledge on them over the past year from this forum and others. any basic tips that might not be considered "general" knowledge or easily located on the interwebz? lol

Nice looking snake. Free is never something to argue with. I passed on a more or less free rainbow boa couple months ago kicking self little for it

Just based off the picture, it looks like a common BCI. :) Also looks like he or she has stuck shed, and that there's no bedding in that tank. Poor baby. Glad you're getting him or her. :)

yeah the no bedding was the first thing i noticed in that picture. i have no idea how old these pictures are so i hope she wasn't kept like that for long, but i'll get her all fixed up and get her nice n comfy. lol

Congrats!! Looks like a nice baby. Certainly is a normal BCI from what I can see from the pics. But they can be very lovely snakes and this one looks to have some nice coloration and markings.

Couple quick tips for you:

1) Boas tend to enjoy slightly cooler temps than bally pythons. I like to keep mine at 88 hotspot and 78 ambient.

2) Boas have much slower metabolisms and do not need to eat as large of prey relative to their body size nor do they need to eat as often. Even baby boas do well on a 7-10 day feeding schedule. Judging by the size of this boa, I would feed him every 10 days - he should do fine with that. And the prey item should not leave a noticable lump in the snake's belly.
