Bad news
You would think that this breeder would have put out a plea for help before just letting the animals die. Sure doesn't give us a very good reputation.

Re: Bad news
Wow this is terrible so irresponsible I wonder how Peta found out about this and reported it.

Ok dumb question, I breed my own rats on a large scale and to say that there were 700 dead rodents out of 10,000 isn't uncommon, to put it into perspective that one dead rat for every 15 live ones on that one week. Or basically 1 per three tubs, Like my friend Kara always tells me the more you have the more you see..So my question was how may of those 700 were frozen thawed??

Good question some of those 700 in all likely hood are frozen thawed.

This clown, mitch behm, is a trust-fund baby. He's been throwing his money and ignorance around for about 5 years. My guess is, since he never got his hands dirty himself, is that he finally pissed off his employees to the point that they quit and when it came to him actually having to work, he ran away. He's been a big mouthed coward from the day he announced to the reptile world that he was going to change the way things were done.
Basically, he's so full of crap that his eyes are brown.
My guess, knowing him as I do, is that he was bragging about how great he was and somehow managed to come to the attention of peta. He was ALWAYS an easy mark and I'm sure they worked him, stroking his overblown ego with compliments while they recorded what they wanted the world to see.
The guy is an egomainical turd and while it's a darn shame the animals were treated that way, it's also a great day for those who keep them properly since he is, hopefully, once and for all, out of the reptile game.

Re: Bad news
I'm not standing up for this company because I don't have a clue as to what animal control walked into. But I had the same thought as what you all have said. How many of those were found in the freezer? I know that I maintain a rat colony of about 50 breeders and I've got probably that many in the freezer. I'd like to know out of 700 dead animals how many were snakes? I have heard several breeders that will put unhealthy or lame snakes in the freezer also. Especially if they are breeding wc species that eat other snakes. Idk but I'd more info on the subject before I get horrified about the issue. It is concerning though.

My first thought it that they specifically lumped the 'dead rodents and snakes' together. So since PETA is involved, it's probably a case of a ton of FT rodents and some FT snakes and some dead snakes in the freezer. Add in a few dead rodents, because no matter how well the rodents are cared for, there will be dead rodents occasionally, and with 10K rodents, that's a lot of possible dead. That's of course ASSUMING that the dead count wasn't all FT feeders in the freezer or being thawed too.
Right now I would guess that I have half a dozen snakes in my freezer and probably 50+ rodents and I have snakes and rodent breeders. So I guess I'd look about the same if PETA raided me and the press printed up a nice article on PETA's word.
Maybe the owner of the place is a big old jerk and all, but that doesn't mean he's actually guilty of having a deathhouse of neglected animals either.

I was just reading some bad guy threads on BOI about global captive breeders . . . People on the list were threatening to call out authorities, this may be what triggered everything :colbert: One person on BOI recently, also said they wanted to contact PETA after receiving a sick animal? Perhaps they've been snooping on the BOI and decided to investigate. Either way, not good for the community, and possibly a push for new laws to govern breeders by :tears:
