Mites on rats

I have noticed mites on my breeding colony of rats , what can I do about them? I read on here use ivermectin paste, but how much and what kind? I have equine ivermectin but would that not poison them? These buggers are driving me and the rats crazy. Is there any type of bedding that helps control them? I have used pine, aspen, pellets and care fresh but have not noticed any difference. Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you sure they're mites, or could they be lice? Lice are a lot easier to treat and won't try to get onto any other fuzzy living things in your house (well they might try, but they won't survive like mites will). Your best bet is seeing if you have any vets in the area with exotic mammal experience. My rats got lice once and the vet just told me to go pick up some all-natural lice spray from a store. He had something he could have prescribed for them but since I had a bunch of babies he was afraid the prescription stuff would hurt/kill them.

These things look like little small dots about the size of a period at the end of a sentence. I just assumed they were mites

Sounds like mites, they make some stuff you can give them oraly but I forget what it's called.

equine ivermetic paste in rice size doses about every 5 days apart.
Sprinkle some hi-yield under the bedding when you change it.
