Questions about Bringing Home New BP
I'm getting things ready for January, when I'll get my BP. I just wanted to know if there were some standard questions I should ask my BP's breeder before he ships.
Some things I thought of:
How much does he weigh (right before shipping)?
What was the size of the last mouse/rat he ate?
He'll be shipped overnight and I'll be taking off the day he's supposed to arrive. Is there anything special that I should do when he does arrive? There are no other herps in the household (atm) and the dogs will not be allowed in the room that his tank will be in - do I just put him in and leave him alone to adjust? Or should I do something else?
Thanks!
Re: Questions about Bringing Home New BP
Hopefully before you get your snake you will have it's home setup and have established proper husbandry including temps, humidity, and security. On the day you receive your snake you need to take it out carefully and slowly, inspect it's body for any defects(mucus around mouth, kinked body, mites etc). Your heat source(s) need to be off and room temp. Put the snake in it's home and after a couple hours you can begin to heat the tank. For the whole next week do not handle or attempt to feed. Only open the enclosure to mist for humidity if needed. After a week you can offer food. If it eats wait at least another day before beginning short (5-10) minute handling sessions. I hope this helps. And CONGRATULATIONS on joining the BALL PYTHON COMMUNITY!
