Need some input from you fine folks

I just got a text from a buddy telling me he has another friend who has a breeding pair of dumeril's for sale. Which is a bit odd because my wife and I were talking this morning about possibly getting a boa. She likes the red tails and I like the rainbows. But thats off topic, so the price seems good $200 for the snakes and $400 with enclosures. Now we have 31 ball pythons so snakes are not new, but we have no idea about dumerils. Input of any kind would be awsome.

Boas are awesome. I can't speak for dums, as I don't have those. I haven't heard anybody that has one have anything but good to say about them though. Personally, I love my BCI's.

I just got off the phone with the guy and the snakes have mites as well, I just dealt with mites 2 days ago from some new ball pythons and they are in my quarintine rack at the moment. So I am going to have to put these guys somewhere else entirely for now if I get them. Big dilema.

I'd just pass...knowingly bringing snakes with mites into your home with other snakes is just asking for trouble...would really hate to see an "Oh no, More Mites!!!" thread a couple months down the road when it could have easily been avoided in the first place.

Yup, I'd totally pass if they have mites. Why knowingly bring that home? No thanks.

Skip the mites. Let them be someone else's problem.

Id say keep looking. I rescued my first dum a few months ago and just picked up 1.1 sub adults for $150. so the price is good but knowingly bringing in mites is just asking for trouble! If the enclosures are made of wood then you are in for a real treat trying to get rid of them also.

I didn't see all these posts until I got back....So here is what I thought, I just started treating for mites 2 days ago so I thought I can do this. I set up a quarentine in my living room now, when I got to the sellers house I treated the cages at his place, and everything in them. They are glass not wood. Their husbandry was crap the humidity was crap the female has a stuck shed and she is the sweetest little thing ever. The seller was afraid to handle the male so I had to just reach in and pick him up, he was awsome. Nothing to fear here but the humans providing inadequate care. Both snakes were freezing cold as well. So I took them. I also took every precaution I could with the mites before taking them out of there. I used the nix solution and sprayed them down and put them in pillow cases that I sprayed as well. I know about the contoversy PAM or NIX. Love it or hate it, everyone has a preference. Any hooo..they were not being treated with anything else so this was better than nothing. A couple hours in the pillow cases and dead mites happy snakes. I probably should have not brought them home but there was no way I could leave them there. And I do have 3 cans of PAM coming this week as well for a back up.
Thankyou everyone for the advice though, and I know I won't have anyone to blame for the mites but myself but I could not just walk away.

Welhp, glad they are rescued! Dums are great, they are basically the same size as a BCI. They have really cool pattern, and are generally friendly.

Well the deed is done so.... I love dums! I hope they bring you as much joy as mine have brought me. I had a bout with mites in 2010. I succesfully got rid of them in a week using an iodine solution bath and daily cage cleaning. For any reason they dont work out for you let me know. Id be happy to give them a home after the mites are gone. lol They are great animals. are they adults or sub adults? Gotta get us some pics man!
