Just wanted to say "Hello".

Purchased BP at 10 inches, 12 years ago. Now 4.5 feet long. Cage is an old TV console. Interior is 15"W X 33"L X 20"H. Water dish is sunken in floor and it will sometimes soak and even eat in the water. Floor is felt (glued down). Herp mat style heater in false floor under snapping turtle shell (hide). Driftwood branch in cage. Yes, it does climb on the branch and will occasionally strike a rat from above (so cool). It eats a medium size rat every 3-4 weeks after shedding (aggressive feeder). Temp ranges 80 - 85 F. Humidity at 50%. Light is an under counter fluorescent at 15 watts.

What is the reason for using a substrate? Seems like an added bother and expense. Clean up on the felt is easy, once a month pick up the poo. Cage size? When the snake was smaller it was kept in a 10 gal aquarium. Putting a mouse in there the snake would coil up in the corner (defensively?) and wait to strike. With the larger enclosure it likes to hunt. I'm presently thinking of building a larger cage so it can hunt more.
Not into "tubs", seems to unnatural.

Hey there! Welcome! I looked at the picture in your gallery and think that is a really cool, creative and unique set-up! Sounds like he/she? is doing very well in there. Did you build that yourself then? That's the first time I've seen something like that!

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I picked up an old TV for free, removed the insides, installed a false floor and put plexi-glass on the front. The back is pegboard with material attached with spray on adhesive and is easily remove for renovation and cleaning. I had a red tailed boa for eight years back in the seventies. Grew to 7.5 ft before I gave it to a breeder. She lived in a two shelf bookcase, again with plexi-glass front and pegboard backing and a recessed water dish. I had holes in the middle shelf so she could travel around.

Don't know the sex of my BP. Don't plan on breeding so it doesn't seem to matter. It doesn't come when I call (LOL) so it's name is just "Snake". I am extremely new to the "snake community". Do you people with many snakes breed them to sell? And are they "happy" living in tubs? Don't want to ruffle feathers or should I say snake skin, but seems a little like "puppy mills" except you all seem to care a lot about your snakes.

I have an upcoming project and I could some advice. The floor of the cage is 3/4 inch particle board and over the years has absorbed moisture and swelled up a bit. Also, I heat the cage with a herp mat style heater and am not too happy with its performance. I'm thinking of getting a piece of kitchen counter top and just cutting it to size. For my new heat source I will use a router to cut a pattern of grooves in the underside so I can insert plastic tubing. The tubing would run to an insulated cooler containing an aquarium heater and a power head (pump)to pump the warmed water through the tubing under the floor. The warm side of the cage would have 1/2 inch tubing and the cooler side of the cage would use 3/8 inch tubing.

My BP is fairly active, mostly at night. During mid to late winter the activity really increases. Is it looking for a mate? Think I should seek out a local breeder for a "hook up"? Again, any advice is welcome.... Thanks
