Getting a new thermostat for my rack!!
What brand? I would like a single probe one, not the cheapy like the hydrofarm, looking for about $100 for it. I have been looking at Viv elec on reptile basics, but what's the other 2 major brands I've heard of?

The brands in N america that are proportional are
    Herpstat - best safety features
    Ecozone - Best communication alerts
Herpkeeper - also very good alerts
    Helix - oldest
    VE - updated helix

In the 100$ range there really is only one option the herpstat they offer the most and best safety features at the lowest price it is hard to beat.

I have three VE-200's and have never had a single problem. I have used herpstat in the past as well without any issues. Herpstats have the capability of fine tuning the temp to the tenth of a degree while most others do not. One other thing is the VE have a grounded plug in the back where you can plug in a strip while others have a extension cord style coming out of the unit.

I would go with option two, the basic.

The only differences of note between the two units (plus and 1) are the three prong outlet and the dimming proportional only on the plus. Pulse or dimming is available on the HS1. If you are planning on a rack the 1 would be sensible but if not or if you would keep a enclosure it makes little difference. They say dimming is more accurate to keep temps either way personally I have not noticed much of a difference.
