    Mouse Question?
I have a mouse that looks like it has some kind of infection in his eyes. Kinda reminds me of pink eye. Mucus is build up around it's eye lids and has them shut closed because of it. I feel bad for him. What do you think I should I do? Should I feed him off? Is he safe to feed of?!? Or should I end his life humanely?

The red stuff is porphyrin. It's very common in stressed mice and rats and could be a sign of URI. It is safe to feed to your snake.

Thanks Satomi for the quick response, but are you sure, because it doesn't look like porphyrin to me. The pictures online look like scabs around the eye. But this little guy has mucus inside the eye that seals it shut. Is that the same thing?

I'm pretty sure it is porphyrin. It can be a mucous form too.
I guess a photograph would have helped.

Either way, I'm really sorry the little one passed :(

Is it normal for mice to die from that?

Did he have difficulty breathing? I'm not totally sure about mice, but some rats have shown signs of what you described before they die. (usually of RI)

He just looked scrubby and had a hard time moving. He didn't look like he was having difficulty breathing to me.

Hmm. Then I'm not totally sure of the cause of death. Perhaps someone with more mouse experience will chime in.
