As I plan to build me cage, I see that many of the "TOP OF THE LINE" cages have the acsess to the snake through the front. Does anyone belive that it is better to interact and handel your snake from the side, instead of grabing it from the top?!?!?!

Don't feel obligated to answer, just something I was wondering.

If you have a nervous, or easily stressed snake, coming at them from the side of an enclosure could be better. Coming from the top can seem very predatory and threatening. (I'm assuming...trying to think like a snake.) But of course, many snakes thrive just fine in top-opening cages.

If you're dealing with giant snakes, I think a side-opening enclosure is a must.

I'd go for side-access across the board if I could.

I would go with the front entry, does make sense that the snake would feel less threatened, and easier for bigger species.

I always assumed that the side entry was simply because it enabled the top section to be solid thus preventing or reducing escape of heat and humidity. When I go to pick up my little guy I go very very slowly (I have a tank now so the top is my only option) and gently take him from whatever the opposite direction he is facing happens to be. Then I slowly lift him out and he'll usually ball up about half way and then realize I'm not trying to eat him and explore. I've only handled three times though because I'm waiting for him to establish a consistent eating pattern. And handling stresses them out.

I have a 30 gallon long w/ a screen lid...I always pick her up from the top. But she is the gentlest snake. Never bit me or tried too.
