Some people shouldn't be allowed to have pets :/
My boyfriend has an older brother who had a sweet normal ball python. She died recently and it made me pretty upset. She lived in a 10 gal aquarium with only one hide that she didn't even fit under. The sources of heat were a single heat lamp (which every time I checked was off) and a UTH. The amount of filth in the tank was ungodly. There were urates and old sheds completely mixed in to the substrate and it looked like it hadn't been changed in at least a year. He had her for over 4 years and the person who gave her away didn't know her full age. He tried to say that she died of old age but I don't believe it. She was just a bit longer than my yearling and just a tiny bit wider too.

The worst thing about the situation is that I wanted to take the snake off of his hands but didn't want to offend him. That is the last time I am gonna put a person's feelings before the well-being of an innocent animal ever again.

Good plan. In no way does someone's "feelings" go above an animal at risk of death because of the treatment (or lack of in this case) it is being subjected to.

Exactly. A life, especially one as long-lived as a ball python, should always take priority over such a thing as hurt feelings. Poor snake :(.. I don't think I would have been able to let that go on..
