Rough Green Snake in Trouble

Hey guys,

My sister got a rough green snake from petco about 6 weeks ago. We got it to eat just fine a few days after bringing him home. (he hunted medium crickets) But since that first time he has blatantly refused to eat anything. We have tried medium and small crickets and superworms with feeding tongs. Temps are usually 80-85(hotside) during the day and drop to maybe 75 at night, she's been using an infrared low wattage heat bulb. Humidity bounces between 40 and 70 as she is not home too often during the day. He is being kept in a 10 gallon. He has plenty of clutter in his cage with wooden structures and vines to climb through and places to hide. We are getting quite worried and are unsure of what to do. When she brought him home he weighed in at 10 grams and is currently 7 and dropping. We have been trying to limit handling as well.

Please, any experienced advice is greatly appreciated.

Here's a picture of him, he looks a bit brighter than normal in it due to flash, he has always seemed considerably darker than most photos I've seen of rough greens online.

I cant say why hes not eating, maybe a parasite or just stressed..I have two and I dont handle them at all. I also notice their color fluctuates a little here and there.

A ten gallon might be too small. I think they like a lot of vertical space with a lot to climb on.

Also try just putting the food in his enclosure instead of tong feeding

We tried everything we could think of. Just when we thought he may finally be eating and coming around, he passed. That was Friday.

He was such a cool little guy and will be missed </3

I agree on the tall tank with foliage...they are such great snakes but so fragile. I had one pass and the two remaining seem pretty healthy. I wish there were a breeder..









Sorry yours passed, I was surprised at how sad I was when I woke up and found "iggy" dead.

did you know how old he was? the animals at petco and petsmart aren't usually in the best conditions.

Parasites. He probably had them when you got him and they multiplied until he couldn't cope anymore. Next time get a fecal done as soon as you can and treat appropriately. They're neat snakes and once you get their guts cleared up they do fine.
