First Purchase -- Pewter 66% Het Pied Female!!!!
Made my first purchase ever and bought an absolutely gorgeous Pewter female from a Pewter het pied x het pied breeding online. She's going to be shipped here soon!

I've heard a lot about pied markings, and the pied gene doing strange things to patterns on animals that aren't visuals. I've also heard something about weird patterns happening with Pewters especially when they're pied. The girl I'm getting has some pretty high-white sides, along with patterning and color that is different from most of the pewters I've seen recently. It's part of what made me fall completely in love with her! :)

So long story short, I'm wondering if by that picture anyone has any input on the whole pied thing when combined with Pewter, and if anyone has any info on pied markers at all. I really don't understand them too well, so anything helps! Thanks!

I dunno! I just hatched a pewter 50% het female. Same thing: high white sides, some fading. Her mom is also a pewter, but mom really doesn't look like that. So I'm cautiously optimistic... but I've got three years to wait before I really know.

(The trick with the pied gene is that sometimes it does dramatic things... and sometimes it's more subtle.)

Hey, what color are her eyes? I just noticed my girl has gray eyes. Almost blue. I've never seen that color on anything other than a BEL. Momma pewter has black eyes.

You're right on point sir, I would also suspect she is het for pied. Though not for certain, especially assuming she is younger it could just be her high contrast of an exceptional pewter and the colors haven't really dulled or faded to much yet. I know my little Blk Pewter girl was also high contrast when I first bought her but over time has lightened up considerably. I have two 100% het pieds (not proven) and the only reason I picked up the pair was because I could tell there is seriously something funky going on with them. Normally I don't like dealing with hets unless I produced them. The piebald gene is linked somehow to the leopard gene, from what Justin Kobylka says. I would have to agree after seeing my pair(I didn't read about the leopard link til after I got mine) since their crazy leopard patterning is what caused me to research the effects of the piebald trait as markers in non-visuals.

I can snap some pics if you would like to see what the piebald gene does to normals. I believe my male could be possible leopard I can't wait to work with him and the female is a semi-reduced pattern with high banding, almost no alien heads and has the letters H E X pretty clear on one of her sides and partially the other. I've never seen prettier normals in my life!

oh btw, you should ask for underbelly pics. Pewters usually have plain white underbellies from what I have seen and often times piebalds will have some kinda tracking patterns towards it's underbelly or on. If it has something weird going on with it that could be another signal.

I don't have her yet, so I can't be sure, but if that pic's anything to go by they look more gray and blue than black, as well. Hopefully that's the case!

Thanks for the pic, gorgeous snake, and here's to hoping yours is 100% het too!

Thanks! Hopefully she does prove out... again it'll be a while, especially because I'll have to find someone local with a visible pied male willing to split a clutch so I can prove her out. As far as belly pics go, I've already bought her, so he may be willing to snap a photo for me before he ships her... She may be here next Tuesday if all goes well! I know it's not too long, but it feels like an eternity. :P

As far as your cool het pied normals go, and that info about the leopard gene linking to the pied, I would love pics and any information. Who doesn't want to see more picture of neat BP's?? Also as far as your black pewter goes, I really hope I can get one of those eventually, or make my own. That would be fun!

    --To Everyone Else--

Thanks for the compliments! I'll post more pics once she gets here... only five days (hopefully!) but it seems like forever!

On a side note, has anyone ever heard of breeders willing to let a person use their male in exchange for splitting the genes that show up or something? I'm used to dog breeding where often people with either pay a fee to use a stud male, give the stud-owner pick of the litter, or split the litter up somehow. Just a thought, because I'd rather not get a pied just to prove her out, and would rather be able to get another het pied pewter male or other gene het pied to pair with her, to save on money and still have a shot at making some neat visual pieds.

    Thanks!
