    Odd reptile carpet question
Hi I'm new to the site and I have what will prob be a rather odd question.

I just brought new repti carpet as some of the bits I have for my rubs r getting a bit worn. I noticed that it was made of 100% acrylic. So basically it's acrylic fibres squashed together.

Now I like repti carpet in my rubs its practical and more attractive than newspaper and doesn't agrivate my asthma like some other substrates but it is rather dull.

What I'm wondering is this. A lot of cheap knitting yarns r made of 100% acrylic and so is the repti carpet I brought. Can anyone think of any reason I couldn't knit my new repti carpet in future? I know this wouldn't work for lizards as the loops on the stitches would catch on claws but I only keep royals, well and a tortoise and a musk turtle as well but they have completely different set ups and I don't use carpet for them. I'm wondering this as it would give me scope to make my rubs far more attractive and I can't think of any reason this wouldn't work but I thought I'd see if anyone else could think of reasons this is a bad idea before I under take the knitting. I'm thinking if the gauge was tight the loops would be very tight together and it wouldn't be much different in texture to the carpet.

My concern with either of those (store bought, or home made) is the bacteria and what could grow in them. Do you change it, and wash it EACH time your snakes poops, or pees? Papertowels, or newspaper would be a better choice, imo. I wouldn't think either of those would bother asthma either.

    Re: Odd reptile carpet question
I used to use newspaper but it was staining my snakes bellys and wasn't hugely attractive and tried paper towel but one of my girls pees like there's no tomorrow and it was turning to paper mâché and sticking to her in clumps.

I've used carpet for a couple of years and had no problems, it's removed and washed and replaced with a clean piece each time it's pee'd or pooped on. Each piece is washed in a baby disinfectant intended for sanitising baby bottles and the like and fully dried before being reused. I've not had any health or any other kinds of problems since I started using the carpets and my boys actually seemed much happier since I started using it. Plus it's far more absorbent for little miss pees a lot than the news paper or paper towels where
