Nix Treatment Questions ?

So how does the Nix work out? We just found a Mite crawling on Avalon's water bowl, so I went an picked up the distilled water and a bottle of Nix..

Just want to make sure this is a safe to do and reconfirm how it is done..?

Mix 1 small bottle of Nix with 1 gallon distilled water and spray everything right?

Even the snake?

What about her head and eyes? Should I avoid spraying her there?

Do I take her water bowl out for awhile? When should we put it back in?

Do you spray just once or every day? How many days in a row?

I would *not* do that. The only way I personally would treat mites is to soak Avalon in warmish, dechlorinated water just deep enough to cover his body for 20 minutes, get Provent-A-Mite (PAM) and treat the tub *only* according to the directions. I would not use anything other than water on the snake itself. I've heard of adding a single drop of Dawn dish soap to the water but the one time I dealt with mites I didn't.

Edit: I have been told by many people that the ingredients in PAM are the exact same as in the Rid or Equate bedding spray for lice/ bed bugs. It's up to you if you want to use something that's not intended for use with an animal. I've heard of people using it with no problems but I've also heard from many people who say not to use anything but PAM. Never use either of these on the snake itself, being in the treated tub is enough and be sure to let it dry and air out for the recommended time. If you have any inverts (scorpions, tarantulas, ect) be sure to move them to a different room and keep them far away from anything that's been treated.

never used the Nix treatment but i used the reptile relief spray you can get at petco/petsmart. It works wonders for me, i spray every snake before it comes into my quarantine rack. i keep a spray bottle in my reptile room full to spray my carpets cypress mulch before it goes into the cage. I ordered the gallon bottle from RBI. i also have PAM in my reptile room just as a back up, never used it yet(cross my fingers i never have to)

Guess I should have said something in my original post like " For people that have used the Nix Treatment......." I'm Not looking for a Debate.

I have used nix. Soaked the snake in water with a bit of oil. Wash off oil good. Then, spray no all over rack and tub lastly I like to buy some love ridding spray and spray that on carpet/ room. PAM is easier but when Isis the nix the above worked well. GOod luck :gj:

Leave the water bowl out for a day so the snake can't wash the nix off by soaking in it. remove all bedding from the tub then spray down everything snake,tub,rack everything. you want to treat every area the mites are or could have laid eggs. wait a day then give them a bowl of fresh water and you should be good. i heard of people repeating the process a week later but for me one treatment wiped em out. oh and have fun mixing the nix in the water it is not as easy as it sounds lol.

I have also used the nix method. For me, it seemed to work like a champ. I bought a trio of adult pieds that were infested (needless to say i was a bit upset to see this after spending a fortune). I did not have any PAM on me, so I immediately was searching for alternatives. I came across the nix. What i did was the gallon of distilled to a bottle of nix shampoo. I put each snake in a tub of water for 20 minutes, which killed all the live mites pretty quickly. While i was doing this, I scrubbed and sterilized everything. Floors, racks, bowls, etc. Then I sprayed everything with the nix, especially the tubs. I then used newspaper for substrate for the next two months, which would be sprayed with the nix and put in the tub. I continued to spray everything down all over again once a week. It was a pretty bad infestation on these snakes, and I was worried about them returning, as I have read several posts that state that they have popped back up or whatever. But sticking to this regiment for about two months, I had never seen another mite since they were first discovered.

There were a few videos on youtube that I used as my guide. Hope that helps.

We ended up taking Avalon out of her tank and soaked her in mild water with two drops of Dawn in it.. Let her swim in that for a good 30 minutes.. I then sprayed some of the Nix mixture in the soapy water with her and let her in it for another 10 mins..
She lives in an aquarium that has two ceramic hides, a water bowl and some vines suction cupped to the back glass. We took all of this and soaked it in Hot water and a cup of the Nix mixture.. Removed all the Cypress Mulch and sprayed the entire glass tank down with the Nix spray.. Let it set a few minutes and wiped dry with paper towels. We put paper towels down as substrate till we see if this kicks the Mites.. Replaced everything

I don't think she has Mites very badly, she just has been soaking a lot lately and I just seen the one on her bowl.. I looked her over really well before we even treated her.. I checked behind her eyes and under her chin( which is really white) and couldn't see any at all? Just the soaking and the one on the water bowel. Possible a few in the water bowel also, but with the wood substrate it's hard to tell.. There was a few rounder black dots though?
