Milk snake

Here is my neighbors milk snake, Jim. (he also owns Boss, a BP)

Just thought we would share these!!

Milk snakes creep me out. I know the ryhms, etc., but they just look too much like a coral snake for me. :oops: I'm a little embarassed by my state of milk snake woosiness.

Very nice Pueblan Milksnake. I have a pair of them and they are very neat little snakes. :D

No need for the woosiness Ken....Just remember the old saying "Red on black, friend of jack, red on yellow, kill the fellow" Though I prefer to end it with poison fellow.

I love the milksnake....they are so cool looking.

Yea everyone thinks it is a coral at first sight, but it is a cool snake, very hyper and lightning fast. I was going to say Pueblan, David, but i didn't know how to spell it;)

They do look dangerous, don't they, Ken? And it is true that if you can't positively ID it, you should not mess with it. In the wild, that little rhyme only works in North America. I've spent a lot of time studying the many different sub-species of milks and corals, and feel pretty confident in telling them apart...but I still wouldn't ever mess with'em in the wild!

Its pretty easy to tell the difference between a non-venomous colubrid and a Coral if you know what to look for. Corals are generally much skinnier because they mainly feed on lizards and frogs.....the banding and colors are also very different.

That's just the point, David..."If you know what to look for." Which means a person has to educate themselves pretty well to be sure. It's not so hard in North America, but in Central and South America, the coral snakes have a lot more variability and it would be easy to mistake them for a harmless milk...IF you didn't know what to look for.

Very true....its a good thing I don't go to SA or CA very often, LOL.
