Disunity: A Warning from Ohio

How discouraging! I wouldn't mind getting involved the next time something like this comes down the pipe. How can people want to ban all exotics after ONE incident and not ban all drinking after hundreds of deaths from drinking and driving and all guns after hundreds of people have been killed by them over the years (would also fight gun control to my dying breath as well).

People hate what they don't understand.
Politicians want to meet some sort of quota, what better way to do it than by banned something people in general tend to fear?
It's ridiculous to you and I, but to the general public it seems like a good idea to ban something we are spoon fed to think is scary and dangerous. It is far from an excuse, though, we live in an age where we have all of this knowledge to gain at our finger tips, yet some choose to ignore it. It doesn't just have to be about herps, or sharks, but with racism, sexism and a mountain of false stereotypes.
It's sad, but my future in exotics doesn't seem bright living here in the states.

Very sad and disturbing! Typical media pandering and using fear as their basis for new laws. That is why I hate seeing programs on Animal Planet like Hoarders that show obsessed people with snakes and try to portray them as the norm for snake enthusiasts.

Tv has always portrait the worst of the worst when it comes to reality shows if you watch fatal attractions how many times have they had people that own poisonous snakes and die by them.
But you wont see shows where you just see people owning snakes in a responsible manner because that doesn't give ratings its to boring.
Most of the Ball Pythons I have seen would never survive in the wild from coloration alone if people would just educate them self's we be much better off.

! You are so right but I would like to point out how many people die from dog maulings, getting eaten by pigs (which are exotic). As for exotic animals house sparrows are exotic and they have caused major damage to the enviroment, and they spread diseases, All tropical fish are exotic we could go on and on and on. By the way almost all breeds of dogs are exotic too, when is the last time you seen a german shepard or pit bull in the wild?
Responsible snake keepers need do politlely drown out the bad mouthed ones even if the laws are idiotic. Lets ban guppies! :(

Politicians will always look for ways to get their votes, they will always chase hot topic issues. Because domesticated dogs, fish, and birds are considered a norm, snake keepers are still considered the abnormal. When people generally picture someone with a python it's pretty much instantly that many of the older generation would picture the lead singer Alice Cooper. If you don't know who that is, you are either too young, or just did not keep up with the Rock genera. Google him and you'll see what I mean.

Regardless of how many advanced keepers are out there, the only ones that end up on the news are the ones who do bad, after all do you wnat to watch a news report on "Local snake keeper keeps tons of snake healthy and happy" or "Local snake enthusiest releases his 14' python, later found in someones pool, should we ban these giants??".

My aunt and uncles basement on the coast of CT that they refused to evacute (were in a mandatory evac area) are now surrounded by dihydrogen monoxide and is has flooded their basement and is weakening their foundation as I type! LOL BAN IT!

As a life long ohio resident (besides college in florida) i was surprised and dissappointed that this actually passed. Out of control government strikes again.
