Quarentine...

I am possibly picking up either a BCC or another BP tomorrow and I was just curious If I could quarantine him in my closet across the way. I dont want to risk my year old nephew getting sick from him so I dont want to stick him in the other end of the house. The closet stays closed all day so he would be pretty secluded.

Further away from your current snake(s), the better.
As long as they're not in the same room as your animals, then it should be fine.

Also be sure to use separate tongs and wash your hands after touching your new addition

So the closest should be ok? He wouldnt come out until probably 2-3 months like advised Im just worried cause they would only be 20 feet apart but separated by one door.

That's obviously not the most ideal situation, but if your careful it should be fine

Its either that, or risk my 1 year old nephews health. He was born with heart problems and is extremely far behind with his development and spent the first 3 months of his life in the hospital. His immune system is not the strong and has been sick more times this year than I have been in the past 5!

You're concerned about a human (your nephew) and are placing the snake in quarantine as a result? Or are you concerned about your other snakes and are quarantining them from your new animal? I'm confused... :confusd:

If your nephew has a compromised immune system, have him wash his hands if he handles the snake and otherwise practice proper hygiene (ie: wash his hands with soap and water, keep your new animal in proper conditions, etc.). Otherwise I can't see what, if any, additional risk a snake would pose to him. Practice proper quarantine procedures for your other animals and for yourself/any visitors that might come into contact with the new animal. Otherwise, the world at large would present more of a risk to a human than what a reptile would, so I don't really know that keeping the snake in the closet would be necessary or advisable.

Everyone has their opinions, but I personally don't think 2-3 months is long enough for quarantine. I practice 6 months at the bare minimum and I still fear hidden illnesses (which could lay dormant for months - up to 9 I believe)

Human zoonosis with a snake is very slight mostly the problem is salmonella. Good hygiene is usually all that is needed hand washing between human snake and snake human transactions. Salmonella is carried in the feces so keep that away from your nephew too. I usually toss it straight away and seal the bag when little people are around. Past that there should be no issues.

To protect your snake from troubles quarantine is critical. It means separate gear and washing hands and such between contacting the new comers and original. Boas introduce a extra risk IBD it is transferrable and very serious. It cam lay dormant for years (3+) (so quarantine should be years between a boas and pythons) I also believe that fecal exams should be done on the new comers and in the case of a boa an IBD blood screen as well.
