    Looking for ASF genetic info
Hello I am getting into the process of breeding my feeders, and I was wondering if anybody would care to explain some of the genetics to African Soft Furs, or where to obtain this information as I can't seem to find much. I find it interesting and would like to understand a little better to play around with while breeding my feeders. I need something to contemplate in between BP breeding season! I know there are quite a few different colors and coats, I was curious what the proper identification of them where, and how they interact with eachother, also I've seen a bit about megacolon and how its tied to certain genes? If anybody has any good info or advice I'm interested in hearing. Thanks.

I don't think there is nearly the genetic diversity in ASFs as there is in rats, but if memory serves me correctly, there are different eye colors and coat colors you can try to breed for. I only have a small ASF colony and they're all pretty standard brown and white hooded looking.

Yea see I have a couple different types but I don't know what they're called. I was also wondering if different things will pop out or do I have to have one already to produce more like hairless or dumbos. Do they just pop out and I hold back or to I have to find somewhere to get different ones first? Thanks for the response man. Anybody have any in depth genetic info for ASFs? How to identify or anything?

I picked up 2.2 last September. One pair was the standard hooded looking ASFs while the other pair was almost all brown and half again as large. I've only bred hooded to brown so far(have my first all brown and all hooded colonies ready to pop any day now) and I've gotten a mixture of both types though the browns are still growing quite a bit larger than the hooded. I was hoping to produce larger hooded ASFs by mixing the lines but it seems only the browns have the capacity for largeness in my colonies.

Here are some growouts. Notice the brown is still the same size as the hoodeds. They grow at the same rate but the browns just keep going after the hooded have maxed out.

I have 4 different ASF colors.

The standard white and brown, pure brown, brown with white on their foreheads, and ambers which are white and orangey brown with red eyes.

a lot of this is selected breeding. you want brown, breed ones that have the most brown to each other. or if you want white do the same. this post might be move as there's a section for asf. but here's 2 of mine.

Are your browns noticeably larger as adults than the others?
