Question about Tstat use

I currently have 1 RBI iris sweaterbox rack (4 tub) and a VE-200 tstat. In the next couple of months, I'm looking to get another one of the same rack. would that rack need its own tstat or is there a way I could connect both racks to the same one? If I can do both to the same tstat, how would you do it? with a power strip?

If you're getting the exact same rack you would be able to use 1 tstat. Provided you use a power strip and both racks have the same heating element.

If both racks are identical you can use a single thermostat with a power strip. Keep in mind that one of the racks won't be monitered, so if the flexwatt fails there will be nothing to stop it. Personally I would use seperate thermostats. Or a multichannel thermostat like a Herpstat 2

I'm curious why?
Since it would essentially be setup the exact same way that ARS and Freedom Breeder racks are setup.
Every level in those racks has individual strips of flexwatt that is then plugged into a power strip and there is only a single probe on one level.

I'm not terribly fond of those either, way too many variables that aren't being monitered. All it takes is 1 to malfunction. If it stops working you might not even notice, but if it overheats you could lose everything. It is a question of what risks you are willing to take.

Yes the rack I would be getting would be identical to the one I already have.

I also would have a concern it is a lot of animals to trust to a single unit. Also with two racks there is going to be variations (a few degrees up and down in a single rack) and likely a few rack to rack so it is possible to see a fair variation top of one to the bottom of the other. Racks are a bit of compromise the temp usually is not exactly the same top to bottom. Balancing two might mean more than an optimal inside the variation.

With the VE I would strongly suggest a failsafe T-stat especially with a rack. Personally I would suggest a failsafe (second T-stat or internal circuits) it protects against probe pulling and failures.

You could use the one Tstat. However, make sure you do not exceed the wattage levels for your VE 200. The temp fluctuation is something you will need to decide if you can live with. I personally use multipe Tstats, only because I am overly precautious.
